Description

This 8-inch Japanese Coastal Gun is located on the northern shore of Peale Island, Wake. It has been reported in the past, apparently erroneously, that this gun was British and had been brought by the Japanese from Singapore after it was taken by the Japanese. Apparently this was incorrect. The reality is that the gun came from obsolete Japanese naval vessels, which had been purchased from the U.K. and Italy in the years before WWI. Source: (hhtp://www.pacificwrecks.com/gun/8inch/wake.html). This picture was taken in March 1990 and later scanned. Thanks for visiting, Sig...

It was very common to use old naval guns for coast defence during WWII. Glad you got this fine shot from Peale Island on the Wake atoll. It is quite out of the way for the casual tourist despite Wake's appeal to WWII history buffs like me.
