Description
Hello everyone and thanks for looking...
From time to time, one of our fellow Rendo artists will post a picture then get comments from some disgruntled member that makes the artist stop and reconsider just why they should be posting their work in the first place.
It seems every other week someone here is saying they're gonna take down their gallery because some talentless hack decided to send a flaming comment.
Personally, I enjoy seeing the negative comments, because that tells me where I need to improve, and gives me something new to work on. For some of our friends here, posting their art is a very personal expression, and they don't take criticism in the same way.
It takes a certain amount of courage to post something that you've worked on, put a little heart and soul into, and let others criticize it. For some, those comments can be pretty important to their self esteem, and their desire to post anything again.
Folks even take offence if the commenter hasn't written a huge book about their work, and tend to look down on the "Nice job!" comments, too. Does anyone out there know how many pictures get uploaded to Rendo each day? I'm betting it's more than a couple hundred. Who's got time to write a book on every one, and still let folks know they've seen it?
For all my friends out there, please don't take offence if folks give you a bad review. Think of it as constructive criticism. If you get a short comment, well at least the poor slob bothered to look at your work! And if you think someone's work could be better, why not tell 'em what you liked about it, what they could improve on, and if you'd like to see more of their stuff?
Oh well, that's my rant for the day. What do you think? I double dog dare you to leave a comment! ^_^
Tom,

P.S.-- Can anyone tell me why everyone wants you to view their pictures in full size? Is there a special prize that's given out for that? Does Rendo send you money if your picture gets full sized more than others? Really, I'd like to know!
P.P.S.-- Check out my picture in FULL SIZE! You'll be glad you did!

Fantastic looking artwork, very well done!!! hug's Ute
A so superb scene!
Thoughtful piece you have written on the commenting topic.I look at a lot of images on here in all the sections - not just the Daz stuff that I do.I con fess that I'm as guilty as the next person at just reeling off 'Nice work' etc - and I rarely leave negative comments - generally there is no point. The artist has had fun producing their work and who am I to rain on their parade? I've posted work here that I've thought was the best I could do but got very little feedback and done others that I thought were mmm.. okay that have received ten comments or more - eye of the beholder I guess.
Fearless, the girl or the dragon? Maybe both? Or maybe one is foolhardy? As to your comments, I hear you. My way of looking at it is why worry just post. If no one likes it that's there problem. I am perfect. Haha!
Excellent !
this 'poor slob' and 'talentless hack' sez....nice work
She looks really angry but whats that little sword gonna do?? Maybe they will kiss and make up... I noticed this one thing....every time i get a truly negative comment (there's been a few that hit me), I click on that person's gallery to see what their style is... and surprise!!....not one upload. If someone is a true atrist (and not just digital, I'm sure most of us drew with charcoal and sketched as we were growing up) you tend to just look at it for what it is-- art: an expression of the individual's mind. Who are we to say that what is in their mind is wrong? ;) I agree though if someone doesn't want bad comments, to check that box. Therein solves the prob!
Well Said Tom! I am one of those who tends to leave short comments. I'm usually here late and just want to let you know I looked and I liked. Many of us have busy lives. Btw, I love the image. Great monster. I'm missing your special effects though.
As a beginner and someone with ever thickening skin, I say that I personally like it when someone gives a suggestion on how to improve something. "It sucks" is not very constructive, though I have been fortunate enough to have some very talented people give me constructive criticism on my work. Feel free to comment or critique my work.. hopefully with suggestions to go along.
A fantastic image to go with your words! I thank you for all the wonderful comments on my images :))
I liked reading your rant, just look at all the big comments you got! hehehe Most artist are thinned skin when it comes to our own art. If we like it and post it and hope others will appreciate our efforts, if not, oh well. We did it for ourselves anyway, right? Just do what you enjoy, that's why we do it, enjoyment. hugssssss
A very nice image and a great perspective.
OMG! Looks like she needed full body armor for this confrontation! Excellent composition! (:

Very nice scene! Excellent work!
Thank you Tom for guiding my to this post People like things for different reasons and Im Favoring this for the great feed back and reactions! She has a very powerful pose as well. Cheers!
I spent 3 years in Art college...pinning up work on the wall for the whole group to pull apart & highlight what works well or doesnt. Constructive criticism is something that everyone should learn to take/give & then perhaps the world wouldnt be such a bad place to be. Back to this image....the poser spacts work really well...a lot of ambient lighting flattening some areas but on a whole they look great whereas the dragon could use quite a bit of attention IMHO. Its looking almost cardboard "cut out" with a definite lack of detail in the beast itself. Whilst there are finer details its the mid/large scale features that are missing such as muscle forms & possibly the flat looking lighting. The eye also needs finer glints of light or reflective surface for more realism. Cool work..I hope my comments help :)
Hey Tom, I feel the same way most of the time. 1) If people stop to leave a comment, that's great. I do most of my commenting at work and don't have the time to leave a full detailed dissertation on what's good or bad. So, if someone takes the time to stop by one of my and say hello, all the better. 2) I can't stand it when people have have no gallery here or who have never even tried to use the programs, blast the people who are just starting out. Hell, if you go back to my very first image, I SUCKED! Big time. But, you learn and you get better over time. Now, I don't suck as much. :P 3)Dragons should know never to mess with they lady warriors during their "time" of the month. :P
Now Tom! You certainly stirred things up here! :P Fearless, a wonderful image AND title, even 'fearless' could be applied to your 'rant' :) As you might remember I once posted an image with the same kind of 'rant' (grins today it's condidered 'my most populair image to date' by Rendo and you even posted a reply in you blog I think) Lets see the numbers.. After your image_id= you will find the number of your image. So I looked at the images uploaded from dec20th to dec27th. 2875 in one week with a calculated average of ~410 a day. Also from feb28th till march7th (sunday to sunday) 3030, average of ~433 a day. Images currently in the databases at rendo: Over two million and 28 thousand.. Every day I get between 35 and 70 e-bots from uploaded images from my fav artists. Also I ~try~ to look at the 'what's new' pages, but frankly I cannot do that often. I simply cannot view over 400 images a day, ~every day~. (If anyone can without going totally bonkers, please lemme know.. :P) Now about the comments.. Every one that uploads their images they make with heart and soul likes it to receive comments. When folks are enthousiastic about an upload it makes you smile. When someone makes a critical comment I consider it as an oppertunity to learn and grow. A 'first glance' from a visitor is fresh, unlike the glance of the creator who spends hours and hours on the image. Some simple things like a unnatural posed thumb (happend to me the other day) can simply be overlooked. Now there are some 'critical comments' that are not posted to help the artist involved but to degrade him/her.. The people that make them mostly have no avatar and no images in their gallery.. If you ignore them they mostly crawl back under the stone they appeared from.. :) Full size images. Yes. I love it when people view my images 'full size' because that's the way I inteded the image. The details involved can only be seen in full size. Having said that I also can understand that ppl do not view in full size. They simply might not have the time for it. And let's be fair; it's nice they choose to pick the image outta the 400+ that get uploaded ~every single day~! Now I was catching up and I stayed here quite some time, Looking at your image (yes: full size :P) reading your 'rant' and reading all comments posted. Also funny to see who do not want to get involved in this conversation. I sometimes wonder if they read the comment that are made with the image from the artits. But hey, that also is their right to do or ~not do~! Uhm.. think I've said quite enough here :)
Fabulous pose and expression
it has been the same since I started and I have had a few negative comments bordering on ludicrous, but for every bad apple there is the potential to call people friends with a very diverse group from all over the world. it is people's privilege to delete their gallery, but I think they are playing into the very people that try to be negative. none of us are perfect but a few seems to think so, or they have problems in real life and allow their frustration to take place over common sense. the thing that still puzzles me is some of the same people are extremely good artists, but has a chip on their shoulder and allows jealousy to be their mainstay. others just has a communication problem due to language barriers and what is said in a comment comes across as sarcasm when using an online translator.if I use a translator, after getting the result, I will back track and see if the translation goes back to English as I intended.so many times it does not. I do not like to see people leave when I have come accustomed to enjoying their art and outlook-- but as they say what will be will be if I do want to suggest something I will send an site mail instead of mentioning it in my comment.people still can take it the wrong way to me renderosity rocks and other sites just does not have the potential I think this fair maiden is just going to help the dragon as he has something stuck in his teeth
Bellissima scena..very beautiful work!
Great scene. Looks like the Dragon is already forced to the ground although there´s no blood at her sword.
If your images were bad I'd write negative comments...but they are ALL very good (I discover your gallery today and am amazed at how talented you are...so thanks for having visted my gallery and given me the opportunity and the pleasure to see your art). This one is no exception : excellent.
Very beautiful fantasy scene!!!
Belle scène!
Fantastic work!
Tom I agree with most of your comments. And you have to have a certain thick skin. Really, you are not going to grown if everyone tells you nice job and you believe it. Constructive criticism is always welcome. That being said I would (almost) like to see a rule that you cannot post any comment until you have at least one pic up in your gallery. I get so P****d off when I see somebody slash some other artist and then when I go to the big hoity toity guys gallery .... Nothing. Put up or shut up is my motto. As for view full size it is largely stylistic I think. If you are producing images on a big screen and you fill them with all sorts of objects and/or you really take the time to work your textures in render and postwork then you want them to be seen at their best...and that will be full size. Conversely, if your work has few objects and depends on big splashes of movement, color and light and you don't want fine details to impede the dynamism, then you probably will not need a big image. When I was starting out my work looked best in normal size but as I progressed in my style now they really do look best in full size. Same with artists like Scifibabe who also piles on the props and details. Or Tamboro who is prop lite but does such intricate textures that you would never see them without a full view. So it need not be an ego thing, as you might be implying, but largely dependent on the style of imagery that you create. No one is forceing anyone to click on the full screen - we mearly ask because we want our works to be viewed in the best way that it can be. Sometime size does count :-0 It is good to have these public rants... group discussion is necessary for all of us to wrap our heads around what we do here. Well now you got a few more words than "nice picture" from me :-)
Nice ranting my friend, you did good. It all makes perfect sense to me.
excellent dragon action image
