Description

This is a fairly large owl and not featured too often in my gallery as often as most others there, the Ural Owl is smaller than the Great Grey Owl, and much larger than the Tawny Owl, which it superficially resembles. Distinguishing features apart from the size are the pale, buffish grey-brown plumage, with copious dark brown streaking on the back, back of the head and underparts. It has a round head with plain buffish-grey facial discs, orange-yellow bill and small black eyes. The tail is long and wedge-shaped, with dark barring on the uppertail, and the wings are rounded. Flight is direct and purposeful, recalling that of the Common Buzzard which I was able to catch on the same day for a later posting.

A wonderful shot. The capture occurred at an interesting point in the wing stroke... The wings look (to me) like a pair of hands opening behind the owl.

How coincidental that your shots and Ilona's are so close in composition these days only with different subjects. Almost like you were in the same place but different moments. :-) This is a great shot. The pov settles on that face with its intensity and draws my eye to the amazing bow of the wings. Outstanding as all your wild birds are.
