Description
This termite apartment house was photographed on what the local folks call "Driftwood Beach" at Edmonds, Washington. I found this while prowling around among all sorts of decomposing, driftwood logs looking for macro possibilites.
Termites are all too familiar to me ever since finding one wall in my house had been worked on by these little buggers. Thanks to a commercial termite service, all were gone within ten days of treating my entire foundation with about 350 gallons of something:)
If there are any termite fans here, I apologize for the mass extermination but they had to go:)
Bill:)

Those freakin' termites are really "hard" workers, they destroy everything that means wood... got some shots from last summer, when I watched my cousin laying down a huge tree condemned by termites...
Crunchy. They are very busy workers and its amazing how much they can eat.
Yuck. I agree with you, Bill: "they had to go."
Excellent capture! They can be a problem. What's this! Bill using a canon? ;D
Wow - nasty little buggers. Reminds me of my old house years ago. Super detail - nice shot, Bill!
Nice capture of this apartment building Bill and yeah... exterminate! exterminate! exterminate! In driftwood ok in houses not ok.. glad we dont have termites here but have borer which are almost as bad.. lol..
I like the apartment house reference. We have to spray quarterly, down here, due to the humidity factor. Sweet catch Bill. Dana
they sure do at least interesting seems to look at cool capture makes a face warm hugs, Linda
makes me think if the old Star Trek episode with the old voyager - Sterilize!!!!!!!
They are hungry little buggers!
Destructive little creatures! Glad we live in a stone house.
Cool capture!!
Nice shot. I'm just about to post a shot of some old wood too! Great minds think alike.
OH YIKES! That makes me think about the old Donald Duck cartoons where he was invaded of termites. I really got a bad impression of termites then LOL ! Excellent shot though, Bill.
I must admit...I like Termites...way the heck over in Africa and nowhere near where I live. It's the same with bedbugs...I like them, in somebody else's bed...NOT mine. The same goes for any competitor/predator species. My house is MY house...so if you attempt to eat it or me...you die!!!! That's how I feel about termites, despite the fact that I do like them immensely...in Africa. I'd probably feel differently if I lived in Africa...which just goes to show that there is some truth in the expression: "Absence makes the heart grow fonder." To which I say, "well, make sure they remain absent!" OK...having ranted. I like this photo a lot, though I have to say that termite poop looks like woodlouse poop. How odd! Or have you photographed a woodlouse infestation too? They will move in after termites and clean up after them, which pretty much means the foundation in question is totally wrecked, as are the walls and the ceiling! Ugh...I think I know just a wee bit too much about bugs! But that doesn't change the coolness factor of this photo or the wonderful details and textures. Great work...on your part at least...destructive work on the part of your momentary photographic collaborators.
Its amazing what these little creatures can do..... Aloha
A great Macro Bill... These little items, can do serious damage to most things wood! Good thing you spotted them when you did.. A fine picture.. Rob
Lots of wood up here for them to munch; great find & capture!
wonderful capture!!
Sneaky little buggers....very cool inside look here Bill.
Was it a case of "No termited were hurt in the taking of this photo" :o) You do make me chuckle Bill, thanks. xx
very interesting shot!!!
The Termite Some primal termite knocked on wood And tasted it, and found it good! And that is why your Cousin May Fell through the parlor floor today. Ogden Nash
They gone eat all the world... Great shot
Yikes Bill those lil B's can do a lot of damage! African ones seem a lot smarter and build their own homes!
terrific great image!! thankfully we have houses made in bricks and concrete a bit hard for those termites to bite ;-D
An excellent capture of the damage these little brats do. Thank goodness we don't have any down here they sound a real menace.
Super stellar clarity, light/shadow, textures and striative effects in this wonderful macro, Bill. That dark mealy stuff looks like hamburger. I wonder if its feces. Actually, the whole thing looks like lasagna. And, I am not a termite fan. Every decade or so, we have to pack up and leave while the termite eradicators tent and rid our condo complex of the wood-munching critters, which costs considerable bucks.
they do tear up stuff man made. in the wild they ok for me for they will eat the dead trees and if you have to eat them to live too.
Great macro! Full view is just full of fascinating details. Nice light, too!
