Description
Here are two photos from times past for bmac62 "Bill" and debbielove "Rob." See their galleries for some great shots of the submarine and other exciting exhibits at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry.
The first photo is from January 1955 - only 5 months after the Type IX u-boat arrived in Chicago. (It may be of more interest to car buffs than submarine fans. I can ID 3 Chevy's in the pic. How about the other 3 cars?) I can attest to being at the Musuem of Science and Industry when the photo was taken, but Mother pressed the shutter button. Thanks Mom!
The second photo is by yours truly taken in September of 1992 when the sub was still being displayed outside.
A note on the museum building: It was built for the 1893 Chicago World's Fair - "The Columbian Exposition" to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Columbus' first voyage to the Americas.

Yup. I have been inside this boat twice once in 1974 (stationed at glakes) and in 1985. The original mission was to get enigma and code books. Dan Gallery decided to 'capture' the boat. He got his ass chewed out because if the Germans found out they would change their codes. The surviving crew and boat were held incognito until the end of the war. Dan Gallery, a native Chicagoan, got it to the museum. He also wrote several humorous military/navy themed books.
Wow, thanks Roger. These are great period photos! Cars: I see two 1954 Chevies, one 1955 Chevy, one 1955 Ford, one 1955 Studebaker and one older Buick...most likely a 1948 model. Thanks for the sitemail to get me over to your gallery in a timely fashion my friend. Just went to the Paul Allen (Microsoft) private aircraft collection yesterday at Paine Field in Everett, WA. Great shot Rog. I was in Chicago on leave in April 1963 (when I was in Tech School at Chanute). I got a tatoo on State Street but did not go to the museum. We had other priorities. As to the 1955 shot, I think the first frontal view is that of a Buick (my first car in Canada was a 'Yankee' Buick). The last one in the line I think is a Studebaker. How am I doing?
