Description
The seriously tall building in the back is The Legacy at Millenium Park. Over 70 floors of condos ... very fancy. Million dollar views. (Oh - according to their commercial, some are four million dollars. I'm sure those are at the top with the lake view.)
Ho hum.
What I'm interested in is the building in front. I don't know what it's called, or exactly when it was built, although my guess would be shortly after the turn of the last century.
If you go to Google street view, you'll see that most of the ground floor windows are boarded up, although the back corner that faces Madison Street has a few shops open. When we were there in September, the ground floor windows were filled with merchandise and open for business.
It sits right up against the old Chicago Athletic Association building facing Michigan Avenue, and has a front-row-seat view of Millenium Park.
A grand old lady of perhaps thirty-five floors, I think the stories she has to tell would be much more interesting than those of the brand-new big-money high rise that frames her so beautifully.
Perhaps the new building was mis-named. The real legacy is in the historical building on the next corner.

The one thing I remember about my very brief visit to Chicago is the tall buildings. So tall that sometimes the sun only broke through for an hour each day.
New money and old money....but both impressive in their own right...
Wonderful juxtaposition with great visual interest for both buildings, each in their own way. But I prefer the older ladies, more character.

Several folks have already used the word juxtaposition. This fits your first-rate composition "to a T". So much of Chicago history is engulfed in political corruption (no offense meant Chicagoans), that your grand old building reminds me of a similar building in Kansas City...our City Hall. The mayor of Kansas City in the 20s and 30s had a big tie to the concrete business (he owned it)...this building and our City Hall are concrete...and so are the major roads, bridges, monuments, etc., etc. of that day in both cities. Pretty lucrative...you control the city contracts...you supply the primary building material:) So, to me, there is much more to your fine photo then first meets the eye. Like it for your #2.

Fascinating to see a fancy building shoulder to shoulder with a much more attractive older building. I would like to live in the old styled one even if I would not be able to see the lake.

Have we lost our sense of taste in architecture? the old will still be beautiful in 50 years time but what of the new. you have captured the wonderful contrast between the two buildings great work!!!!

I like the contrast of this photo, the old and the new. I prefer the old building for its architecture as the new one looks a bit sterile. Super capture.

They are both very tall buildings which you have captured here. I rather like the colour of the blue one as it kinda blends with the sky but I'm not sure if I'd like to live up so high.
