Description
You've seen two WWII Japanese fighters in my gallery:
1. Zero or Zeke
2. George
Here are WWII flight uniforms of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). A ZOOM-In helps the detail.
On the left: IJN Petty Officer's Service Uniform. The mannequin on the left is a senior petty officer. The blue chrysanthemum on the upper sleeve marks him as a naval aviator.
On the right: IJN Pilot's Flight Suit. This is a replica of a typical summer flying suit worn by an IJN fighter pilot during WWII. The kapok-filled life vest is genuine and contrasted with the air-filled "Mae West" life vest that was used by Allied pilots. Kapok is made from the bouyant fiber covering the seeds of the ceiba tree.
Both uniforms were donated to the US Air Force Museum by Masajiro Kawato and the Nakata War Museum in Japan.
Please pardon the reflections in the glass of the display case:) The reflections are of other dispaly cases showing pilot uniforms of other countries.
Bill:)
Note: Neil models a lot of WWII aircraft in Wings 3D and displays them in Bryce and Poser and probably a few other things too:) He's always interested in details and uniforms. Here's a link to his gallery ( Neil's Gallery )

Great info. Thanks, Clive
Nice capture Bill...quite interesting also...it is cool seeing all the different uniforms, badges and such different people wore during their time.
fantastic capture!!! great info!! splendid dedication to a great artist!!!!
The models in this display are so realistic, the hands on the one standing are amazing. Great info.
Someone did some great work in setting this up..great information and photo..
Awsome Bill, thank you so much.I've never hidden the fact I love details and this is just excellent stuff. Will definitely help with the modelling / re-modelling work.Again a huge thanks and an INSTAFAVE!!
Very nice photo. I really liked there uniform. Simple. I don't think you need to excuse the glass reflection. I consider myself lucky that you even posted it and I get to see it.....so thanks!
REALLY IMPRESSIVE MANNEQUINS!
Superb capture of these Uniforms Bill, well done.
Great photo. Great detail. And it's good they're behind glass.
kind of scary...
OMG, shades of the movie, Empire of the Sun! Banzai all the way! Ultra terrific capture in this shot, with stellar lighting and detailed effects, Bill! But I think you could have cloned out the light reflections in this instance, at least on the Petty Officer's coat and on the rising sun flag in the background.
Stunning image. You apologized for the reflections, but I think they belong there...they add an eerie quality to this image, somehow fitting with the expressions of these two warrior-gentlemen. The details are amazing and a bit spooky...the officer standing has unusually realistic thumbnails! That's a bit creepy, coupled with the expressions these guys are wearing. It's almost as if they're something other than costume-modeling mannequins that aid in displaying the uniforms. I love that. You've captured this with an admirable bit of sensitivity. Great work! Or as they'd say in Japanese: "Ii desu ne!"
I don't mind the reflections at all! :D I knew this for your work even before I checked the artist's name on the thumb. I'll have to think about why that's so ... I think it links into our conversation. A beautifully detailed display, and you've captured it perfectly.
A great find and share Bill. Reflections are a part of life and sometimes the camera catches them. It's OK. :>) Dana
Great photo. Great details!!!
One of the Jap Kamikaze :)
Great capture and thanks for all the information.
excellent clear shot ! love the uniformes :-)
Nice capture and interesting information Bill. The quick disconnect of the harness on the right seems to be similar to ours (US) which would allow a pilot on the ground to get out of the aircraft fast!
Fine uniforms and a real slice of history shot!
A yes! I remember these guys... And the others... Interesting folks they were too.. A great shot, avoiding the glare ...Well done.. Rob
