Description

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure-dome decree . Samuel Taylor Coleridge The American director Mel Brooks once made a movie where he played the part of French King Louis XIV. The movie wasnt so good but it did produce one memorable line. As Louis, Brooks uttered the words, Its good to be the king. Willie Hearst must have felt that way when he entered his home at San Simeon. The main house, Casa Grande, is 60,645 square feet (thats 5,634 square meters for you other folks) with 38 bedrooms and 41 bathrooms, 115 rooms in all. The house was designed in the Mediterranean Revival-style and houses an extensive collection of European antiques and art pieces.

Wonderful capture of this lavish place! More bathrooms than bedrooms, and maids to clean them all. Now that is high living! I love the shadows of the rails and palm tree. Very nice!

An excellent depiction of a wondrous work of architecture. The composition is set just right to convey the immense scale of the structure. The brilliant blue sky contrasts so dynamically with the exterior that it almost appears like a scene from a dream. It's really a postcard for the site. As for the grandeur of the building .. it does seem to be an expression of power more than taste. Clearly it was built to influence and intimidate guests. There's always a down side to spending your life amassimg material goods. No matter how wealthy or powerful one may be .. we still exit the way we came. That's the common element about hearses, you never see one with luggage racks. In the end, no matter how much we amass, someone else gets all our stuff. I'd rather make art. Who we are and what we did with our time continues to live and touch lives long after we travel on .. when we create original forms like this one above. T.R.

Superb POV employed and terrific architecture on display here with all kinds of stuff going on. I must mention though that the image is a bit too contrasty, with a lot of bright intermixed with the dark. And I once visited a house with no bathrooms....simply uncan-ny.

Your photo picks up all the ornate carvings so beautifully. Wonderful POV and lighting. It looks like a church to me, and in a way it probably was some kind of church to Hurst and his money.
