Description
There are a group of mostly older men who are referred to as "Live Steam" enthusiasts. They typically build small steam engines big enough to ride on and pull several passenger cars.
This little live steam engine is about 3 feet (1 meter) tall and 7-8 feet (2 meters plus) long. The boiler must pass annual inspections and the men that run them have to be completely knowledgeable about the safe operation of a steam engine (mess up and it can blow up).
I left the crop large to give you a sense of scale. The engineer for this little engine was off running a small scale diesel engine.
Here is the engineer: Click Here
Bill:)
Note: A problem for the guys running one of these is it must be attended continuously from the time a fire is lit in the boiler until hours later when the fire is extinguished. Steam locomotives, tractors, cars and boats are a labor of love.

Wow, super cool steam engines Bill! Ihave seen minature steam engines on eBay that were so interesting!
I don't know.....it sure looks a toy, a most sophisticated one, but still a toy, from where I sit, Bill. It appears you used the Poster Edges filter in these photos. In any event, fine clarity, composition, and deep colors in this keen kollage.
big boys toys. wonderful shots here
Definitely toys. And why not, what a wonderful and rewarding hobby. Wonderful photo and I too love the postwork. Excellent.
Great shotting here! I agree! Big boy toys. :) Reminds me when I was a kid. They used to have scaled trains that took kids for a ride at the Drive In Movies. Now I'm showing my age. :)
Oh thats neat!
wonderful!!!
Boys and their toys!!! How utterly adorable Bill! I love steam trains - they just carry so much character and romance... and here is a little one... Wonderful collage and I love the treatment too! :)
Wow Bill this is my type of photo, this looks great, yes a lot of love goes into one of these, got to have your boiler ticket over here to run one of these.. Beautiful engine capture, well done!!
Fantastic. I remember the old steam engines and enjoyed seeing and hearing them. One place I lived an old Malley (Mallet) chugged by once a day. A pleasant memory.

Great images. Fantastic work!!
We have a train show in a public park here once a year and they have a small steam train that takes a few open passenger cars around a track. Its really fun. Wonderful shots of this small engine.
Excellent Bill!!
As you say, not a toy! Steaming shots, Bill! Clive
Magnifique reconstitution
We have a little steam train station close to us, love the smell of the steam.
Oh neat, now that is a toy and a half...awesome!! More people need hobbies like this to keep busy and stay out of trouble :-) GREAT capture Bill!
Old boys toys are often much more expensive, that's for sure! Looks like a lot of fun!
Wonderful hobby.

Boys and their toys--guess they never really do outgrow it!!
TERRIFIC SHOTS!!!!! AND POSTWORK
How lovely to be able to play with these wonderful little engines and you would need to be a real enthusiast to build one of these. Excellent captures.
really an awesome miniature train and your post work is wonderful
Great shots, and the postwork gives this a nicely gritty feel. Excellent work!
That would be a really cool hobby. Could you imagine playing with trains that are small but big enough to ride on???? I could handle that.
Wow....can I ride?
