Description
Construction of the lighthouse began early in 1854 and was completed in 1855. On 15 November 1855 the light was first lit. The lighthouse is located at the mouth of San Diego Bay. It was equipped with a Third-order Fresnel lens which had a diameter of 3.17 feet. This lens was originally intended for Humboldt Harbor.
The 'Old' Point Loma Lighthouse was one of the first eight lighthouses on the Pacific Coast.
The height of the lens was 462-ft. above sea level and the light was visible at a distance of 28 miles. The source of the illumination was sperm oil, colza, lard oil or kerosene.
Because the lens was often obscured by fog or low clouds the flame of the lighthouse was permanently extinguished on 23 March 1891.
A new lighthouse began operation that year on the extremity of the point with the light only 88-ft. above the water.
This picture was taken on 17 April 2009.

Fantastic shot and information! I know Lynell will love this!
excellent photo sig
beautiful capture!!
Wonderful shot! Thanks for the history too, I love it.
Very nice. I was thinking of heading out there in the next week or two.
Light houses are a fascinating story all by themselves. So this light has been sitting silent since 1891...wow. Excellent photo Sig.
Always enjoy lighthouse pictures.
Beautiful...
superb!!!!!
superb capture and Great info sig!!
This is wonderful information. Lighthouses were and still are a fascinating key to saving lives - some worked and some didn't. In areas along the California coast, the thick and frequent fog often made lighthouses mute with their warnings. I have read about many areas where wrecks were plentiful but the lights were obscured by fog more often than not. This really is a great shot of this lonely lighthouse.
fantastic the vue and the lighthouse.
Wonderful capture my friend.
Nice photo of this lighthouse Sig and interesting history on this thank you.. well done!!
many infos and a wonderful clear shot
Splendid shot!!!
Oh wow so great to see this again. I can remember walking around the area, and if I remember right there is a trail or road that we walked down below this to the water. Such a beautiful area. And interesting information you included, are there still only 8 lighthouse on the pacific coast? The tree leaning beside it and the little yellow flowers help show off the beauty of this historic structure, thanks for posting it for me my friend. And happy Thursday!!!
Jolie capture, belle photo!

Very nice scene. Great capture!
a splendid shot !
That is a very solid looking lighthouse that you have captured here.
I love lighthouses, but it's the lenses that capture my attention. Third-order Fresnel ... not bad!! :)
wonderful photo!!
Awesome..
Love the way the tree on the right sort of frames the lighthouse itself. Outstanding POV and narrative. Dana
Amazing!
