Description
They are strangely quiet creatures. Only the flutter of their wings may inform you of their presence. They are seldom-seen, despite their prodigious number; and when seen, they grant you only a glimpse. Chicago's grasshoppers and locusts are like their cousins world-wide, though maybe smaller and more timid than their more rural counterparts. But when you're able to catch one, or a dozen--depending on your location--you may find something of incredible, strange richness. I discovered this in the truck yard my father uses. There is nothing there, but it is rich in grasshoppers. I've only ever seen the garish, green ones...but the ones I encountered in the dying days of summer were changing color. They were the markers of summer for me, and so I captured what I could.
As always, thank you for viewing and reading and commenting, and I hope you're all having a great week. I still have catching up to do with viewing and commenting, and I hope to get reasonably caught up soon!

Grasshoppers are sooo cool...great capture!
Love it ;-)
Great capture of this destructive creature :) I have many of these in my backyard, and the cat loves to play with them.
They always remind me of mechanical creatures, made of some alien metal. Great shot, Chip!
They always seem so robust and awfully strong to me, in their camouflage armour, like a mechanical toy-soldier, the details are just amazing... ready for another attack on a hapless victim, but then again ? I don't think they do, what I might think of them! I've captured, a garish green one, hehe... ('the great escape' 9.6.08), nothing as sharp as yours, but a little miracle in my eyes. BB
great detail Chipka!
Wowww!!!! Fantastic photo!!!!!! Hugs:)
I'll bet this is one of those neat tricks of nature to keep this little guy invisible from the air as the grass fades and the autumn leaves blanket the ground in red, golds and browns. Perhaps at this time of year there is more iron in his food and that manifests itself by depositing its oxidate into his exoskeleton at this time of year.
Excellent image! I can't believe how sharp this is. You must be the most patient person on the world, to sneak up on these things and photograph them before they move. My attention span for waiting for things to hold still/show up/move/whatever is about ten seconds!
Stunning image of this most beautiful critter Chip... Strangely - this is one of the few creatures with more than four legs that I am not scared of at all!!! Love the coloring! :)
Amazing -- the detail is just wonderful, these little critters are so simple, yet with a very strange beauty of their own.
It's quite incredible that you see so many of these creatures in an urban place. I hardly ever see them, and have never managed a photo! This is a super pic!
There you go agen makeing bugs look great sorry im not a bug person but i love the photo.
This grasshopper must have been a painter for the US Air Force at some point in time. The Air Force has for years painted all its' steps, be they concrete or steel, with a pattern of alternating yellow and black stripes:) Well focused, clear and crisp.
Very cool shot!!! Well done my friend!!!!!
LOL! I dont know how you do that...but you put them somehow humanized...Great photo again!
Superb..really wonderful..
One can see so much detail.Focus spot on.Outstanding capture.Well i will remove the Grasshopper from the ruck in your Fathers back yard and store it in my favorite corner.
Amazing how he can just stand there! A great shot.
