Description
Do you see the pineapple above the door? The pineapple is a traditional symbol of hospitality and welcome, and was widely used in the 1700 and 1800s. The open door in this image reinforces the message.
There are several quilt patterns that use the pineapple motif, and it was common to put a quilt with that pattern on a guest's bed as a welcoming gesture. Four poster beds often have pineapples carved into the bedposts for the same reason.
Gateposts, door lintels (as in this photograph), weathervanes, wall stencils, placemat decorations, doormats ... you can find pineapples everywhere, and they all say the same thing ...
WELCOME!

would hate to clean that glass!! Gorgeous shot!!
Great shot and wonderful information!
Sensational capture and once again you have managed to stay out of the picture. Very nice pineapple narrative and very common over older New England doors. Dana
Here in Africa we eat the pineapples and just put a welcome mat by the front door... LMAO.....:)) Just kidding my friend - very interesting narrative and your image is tops. I love everything about it. The light and reflections are spot on! Lief jou! xxx
superb!
very fine photo!
Whoa, love your pineapple doorway. The door, the glass, what I can see of the lobby all looks immaculate. You've captured the essence of pride on the part of this establishment. If you ever get to visit parts of Holland, you will find many houses that look just like this...immaculate. When the Dutch immigrated to the USA, many picked up the nickname, "Scrubby Dutch",...even their sidewalks and front stoops received daily cleaning with soap and water.
Very welcomimg! A wonderful image and great info regarding the fruit. It is great to learn something new! Cheers, Clive
Excellent shot and interesting informations! :)
I never knew that! What an elegant, even sumptuous, entrance! And of course with your signature reflections!
Chicago, city of big shoulders and open doors! Fabulous capture. I love the lintel and the woodwork just inside the door.

had to stare a bit and then saw it lol wonderful capture, Tara May have a wonderful weekend too warm hugs that smile, Linda Kaye
great shot. But the pineapple looks a serivative of the ancient European architectural decoration of the pine cone. Possibly it was changed by some American architect for nationalist reasons....
Great image. What a classy doorway.

Wonderful shot -- great observation! I love your Chicago series -- looks like you got a lot out of the trip. Would like to see more of the Windy City through Tara's eyes.
