Description
I have always marveled at the obvious effort put into constructing old wooden propellers.
Here is just such a work of "art". This propeller was hand carved in the 1960s by a former Boeing Flight Test Engineer and a few of his friends from a ten foot club of laminated birch.
ZOOM for a close look.
Bill:)
Some of you will ask...what's the airplane? It is a Curtiss JN-4D-2 replica of a World War I vintage "Jenny". The builder first flew this airplane in 1969 and donated it to the Combat Air Museum in Topeka, Kansas in 1985. He built the aircraft from the original plans. It has a rip roaring top speed of 62mph :-)

gorgeous capture, great colours!!!!
That propeller truly is a work of art. The shape has to be just right, I'm sure, in order for it to function as intended. It looks so organic, but I'm sure that shape represents a LOT of math!!
This really is a stunning piece of art, the propeller is amazing with the grain of the wood and the glean so bright. I hope your health is now much improved Bill :)
Just beautiful the woodwork and the photography, awesome capture!!!
Lovely work of art that prop, would have taken some time to make thats for sure. Great capture Bill, Lovely work!!
the accuracy is awesome also, since they need almost near perfect balance.love the old plane
I always found wood to be easy to work. Guess there are those who prefer metal for its stability. Excellent photo
Unusual angle! Works well!
Beautiful craftsmanship and presentation. One of my very favorite captures in this series of yours.
FABULOUS! I had the chance to buy a wooden prop in a 'antique' shop in the '60's, but it was £30! my income was £4 a week.
Yeah I was going to say those propellers are very cool and look like allot of work. My dad carved allot and its not always easy...cool Bill
Very nice shot! It's incredible the craftsmanship that went into creating those props.

I thought i recognized that Prop! lol A great way to show it off, Bill.. Great work and it does look good! Rob
Very cool shot I have never seen a wooden propeller before or at least one that was wood grain.
Great image, Bill. My Dad got his wings at Kelly Field, San Antonio in late 1918 in a JN-4D. He had am 19 replica of a laminated propeller (light and dark laminae), which I appropriated, couldn't get to run on my Ohlsson 60 model airplane engine. Later years, gave the prop to my son. Maybe I ought to ask after it.
Wonderful workmanship in this propeller and you have captured it very well. I love the colouring and shininess.
Excellent capture of a splendid bit of dedicated and thoughtful whittling, Bill!
