Description
A partial view of the grounds of Marae Arahurahu near Paea, Tahiti. This is the only marae in all of Polynesia that has been fully restored and is maintained like a museum.
Mareas were sacred places which served both religious and social purposes in pre-christian Polynesian societies.
The marae itself generally consists of an area of cleared land roughly rectangular, bordered with stones or wooden posts(called 'au') sometimes with terraces (paepae) which were used in olden days for ceremonial puposes.
Marae Arahurahu is used for reenactments of old Polynesian ceremonies during the July 'Heiva Nui' celebrations.
In this photo the actual marae, bordered by stones, is partially visible in the background.
