Description
I almost hesitated to upload this shot as it will probably not attract much attention but for those who have followed the moorland scenes and read this I hope will add interest.
I always knew there was once a deer park around Musbury Tor and as a book has recently been published , it stirred my interest..and I'm a sucker for these historical sites ( eg love Time Team on TV)
This ditch was the ditch encclosure of the Earl of Lincoln's deer park and was created in 1304..so this ditch is 700 years old! Imagine the manpower required to create a whole boundary..just with spades. On the top of the ditch, on the park side, was a wooden pallisade so the barrier to keep the deer in was pretty formidable. There were occasional 'gates' where deer could jump in..but not escape. Cunning!
There are other stretches of ditch visible and they are for another visit.
Thank you for sharing the walk and your comments.

Ooh, I love that kind of history too...don't you wish you could see it as it was then? Nice find and capture!
interesting history, thanks for sharing.
really interesting my friend!!! thanks for sharing :D
Great picture and wonderful history! I wish they taught history like this when I was going through school!
beautiful photo and great history jean...
It's like a glimpse into the past!
Thanks for the history and image.
Very interesting! I lived in England for about 6 years and really enjoyed the footpaths. I love Time Team, but unfortunately, about a year after I discovered it on the International History Channel they stopped showing them. Sigh. When I looked them up on the net and saw how many series and episodes there are, I really wished I had known about it earlier. Great shot!
Interesting moorland mood, this grass reminds me of bush with erotic associations. Well done!
