Description
Amargasaurus (named from La Armaga, a canyon in Argentina where the fossil was found) is a genus of dicraeosaurid sauropod dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous Period (130-125 mya) of what is now South America. It was small for a sauropod, reaching 10 meters (33 feet) length.
The "skin sail" on the neck hypothesis was rejected in 2000.The long spines were obviously covered with flesh and skin insted.It was for mating and dominance rituals and for making it look much larger than it was to predators.
Amargasaurus was an herbivore..It swallowed leaves whole, without chewing them, and had gastroliths in its stomach to help digest the tough plant material. It had blunt long teeth, useful for stripping foliage.
