Description
Anna and I got up very early to drive from Kona to Hilo to meet Errol (sharky_ ) and Stella (thevolunteer). It was raining as we left, but as soon as we started up the saddle road**, the rain stopped. We'd heard some horror stories about this road, but I was pleasantly surprised. Considering we hit nearly 14,000, the road was relatively easy to drive. This was close to the summit, just as the sun came up, obviously. WhatIi especially like about the shot is the way the trees are silhouetted, almost as though they've been scorched.

Oh Marilyn - this is superb! What a wonderful image showing the force of the sun! Excellent image indeed!!! :)
I didn't do this drive when I visited but I did do the Road to Hana on the island of Maui and I will never forget it... amazing waterfalls and beauty. This is gorgeous
Here comes the sun Dee doo dee dee Here comes the sun And I say It's alright :) Beautiful shot maz!
How do you always find such striking colors? This is super. I also looked at "the road" and it doesn't look that bad, but if the rental car companies put it off limits they must have a good reason:-)
Nice shot of this fiery sky!
Gorgeous!
What an adventure!
And to think...I was on the other side on fire. Very nice sunrise capture. Aloha

What a superb capture, worth getting up early for.. Lovely work
Holy cow! Daybreak! The sun crashing over the land just as an ocean wave crashes over the rocks. Stunning.
Ultra stellar shot of the scorching sun, as it emerges from the depths to illuminate the background foliage, Missy Marilyn. And, if you mean 14,000-feet in altitude, the air is a bit thin up there, so how were you able to breathe? I assume you were wearing your ever present flip-flops during all this.
Awesome colors and the trees are perfect in silhouette.
The brush in the foreground sure does set up this spectacular sunrise. Dana
Love the trees! Too cool.
fantastic picture!!
lovely capture Marilyn x
superb mood
I just read a little about this road (thank you), and it's pretty amazing. I guess when you convert an old army road, you're gonna have some paving problems, lol. Your pov is way low and you allowed the shot to be mostly sky, so your silhouetted trees do have a scroungy mysterious look, and since you allowed the sun to dissolve some of the trees (I love that choice), they're almost like ghosts or flames in spots. A fine low horizon shot, with a heavy dawn sky, and trees that look like they're at the 'treeline' of this mountain—all squat & gnarled—and there's a moonscape quality to it, though it's also very alive. This trip keeps feeding your gallery with wonders. Amazing source, considering the trip was only several days in length.
