Description

Somehow I keep thinking I should have Ed McMahon doing his signature intro or something... Anyway, you guys have been really patient with me, so it's only fair that you get to see what all of the fuss was about. This is the current state of my "dragon scale armor" worn at the Silverleaf Renaissance Festival in Battle Creek Michigan. It was a bit scary, there was rain early in the morning, but things cleared off and we ended up with a very muggy 80+ degrees for the day. For those who might not have seen my earlier posts, this costume is worn by me, and nearly everything you see I made myself. The scales were made by sculpting an original in modeling clay, which was used to make a silicone rubber mold. then that was used to make over 850 of these scales, 825 of which were used to make the shirt portion I'm wearing here. All were hand-painted and hand-sewn to a backing fabric by myself, as well. The helmet is also my own creation, I embossed the leather by hand, wax-hardened it all and assembled it with the help of a friend. The front of the helmet also pivots, so that I can expose my face to eat/drink, etc. I also made the claws you can see (posted pics of them last year) the only things I didn't make are the pouches and the boots. It was a pretty successful day for me, I need to adjust how the weight of it rides on my shoulders a bit, but that's pretty minor stuff. I'm hoping to add more weapons and do some leggings with more of those scales, too. As if I don't have enough to do already? Hope you enjoyed looking as much as I enjoyed making it! Have a great weekend everyone.

That is one amazing suit of armor. I know it had to take many hours to get there. Those were hours well spent my friend. Fantastic and inspirational work.

This is amazing! The amount of work that went into this is evident, and it's funny, because the anthropologist in me is intrigued by both the costume and the wearer. This says so much about both culture and costume and that's just amazing! Great work on every level. It's wonderfully detailed. Perfectly composed.

Really a great costume. I have two grown daughters who were big in Ren Fest activities for 6-7 years. Lots of costumes passed through our house. Yours is REALLY unique. Love what you did with the scales!

This turned out simply amazing!!!! You should really wear it proudly. How long does the Ren Faire there last?? Cheri and I are going to Bristol next weekend, but I would really like to make that also sometime. One of the few around with permanent buildings like the Bristol one. Site mail me please????

Whoa, I had to come and check out your garb. Great fair garb, you did a most excellent work. It's most incredible. A little birdie told me you have no yet made it to Bristol. That's ok maybe sometime. We have not yet made it to Michigan. We did go to the Ren fair in Tampa. I was not so impressed. I like the permanent building, it adds to the ambiance. Thanks for the link to the Michigan Ren fair. Do you need the link a to the Bristol?
