Sorry Lynell, I haven't found a good looking barn yet. The Taylor sawmill began operation in 1805. It was an “up and down” sawmill not using a circular saw blade. The mill was powered by a water wheel. The mill fell into disrepair over the years and Ernest R Ballard purchased the 71 acres in 1939. At that time there was nothing left except the foundation. Mr. Ballard bought the remains of old barns and buildings to rebuild the mill with original type building materials. He bought a replacement saw mechanism that had been disassembled for 50 years, for $160. It took him two years to assemble the system and they made the remaining parts to bring it into operating condition. He purchased a historically correct water wheel – 1,000 pound, six feet wide, 12 feet in diameter and 40 “buckets”. He opened the mill to show the world how things were done, 150 years ago. Today, two NH State Park employees (most likely volunteers), open the doors on the second and fourth Saturdays, June through August, to actually saw logs into beams for the public to view. SWEET FIND!!!! My moms dad had one of these, I remember as a kid..........so so long ago. Our family reunion is in a couple of weeks, I'll have to go back there and see if it's still there, thanks much for the reminder!
