Description
Balancing Act:
A museum curator must balance two conflicting purposes. 1) To illuminate displays for viewing, and 2) To reduce light to preserve the artifacts.
This is a photo of the Cold War Gallery (North) of the US Air Force Museum, Dayton, Ohio taken from a balcony that overlooks both the North and South galleries.
You can see many of the spotlights high up in the ceiling. Each aircraft is spotted to achieve the two purposes above AND add a touch of drama by adding colorful theatrical effects.
There is an art to all of this that I didn't appreciate until looking through all 2000 pictures I took here over the two day period of the 7th and 8th of June.
For those of you looking at individual aircraft here, I promise to eventually get to each of them :-)
Thanks for stopping by,
Bill:)
ZOOM...there's a lot to see.

Lovely shot, and an interesting display over all.
fantastic foto, looks a bit like how i showed my model kits as teenage boy only larger :P
Fantastic lighting and shot. Great image!!
Very nice point of capture . Well done
I'm really enjoying this series....
The lighting in the arena does give a very dramatic feel Bill, you captured this one nicely!
Awesome display of aircraft... I might end up red faced, but it is not a Dakota I see in the background???
Cool looking photo! I love Air/Space museums.
The one on the right, painted with US Air Force .. the paint job is backwards! Aren't they supposed to be light colored as you look up at them and dark as you look down? Sort of a "camo-in-the-air" thing? That is a LOT of planes. My brain just shut off. It's a bit overwhleming! I like the one that's suspended directly in front of you. There's something up near the nose that's catching the light. Is that the pilot tube?
Wow! What a sight! Great lighting. Very well done, Clive
Stunning!!
Superb shot what a great place to visit, very well done!!! 5++
This pic looks like something out of the movies. super as usual, Bill.
Super shot Bill! Love the detail and exposure!
Great effects. Is that a U-2 zooming over the other planes?
Mouthwatering.... P
superb shot!!! wonderful display!!!
Gorgeous...That place look so big Thanks for share
They must employ a full time bulb fitter...You certainly got the shot with this one.Great POV and exposure. So many great planes, including one I got a request for yesterday! Thanks for another great installment of you Grand Tour.
A "touch" of light?? This is unreal, has an almost sci fi look to it. Chip (chipka) would write a whole book about it--all I can say is that it's absolutely stunning!!
Wow. I could probably spend days in that one room. An alternate title could be "One of everything!".
Great POV! Cool lighting!
Another amazing shot :)
A grand display of planes. Great shot.
It just has the look of a fantasy land to me. Action without movement. Stellar shot!
whoaaa ...what an awesome pov...how it must have felt just being there!!!
Great Scott, is that a Northrop F-89 Scorpion in the near foreground, a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird in the center, a Northrop B-2 at the center left, a Lockheed U2 at the top, and the dual engines of a Boeing B-47 at the extreme left? So many neato aircraft I could spend hours trying to ID them, but just don't have the time. Magnificently captured vista of aircraft heaven, Bill!
great photo!!!
Superb gaggle of Cold Warriors. Great to see and F-89 and B-57 included by the USAF.
I want to go there!!!
