Description

The Horned Puffin is found in the Northern Pacific and gets its name from the horn-like marking above its eye. Like it's eastern cousin (the Atlantic Puffin) like sandeels to eat and carries a dozen at a time in its beak. This Puffin is usually seen at sea (though I chosen to render it in its rocky breeding area). The breeding areas of the Horned Puffin are the coasts of Siberia, Alaska and British Columbia, it winters south to California and Baja California. All large breeding colonies of Horned Puffins in North America are located within national wildlife refuges in Alaska. While not currently threatened, this puffin's future is uncertain. Drift-net fisheries on the high seas killed tens of thousands of Horned Puffins until the practice was largely eliminated by the early 1990s. Coastal fisheries still cause some Horned Puffin deaths. The population of these birds has been declining dramatically due to the introduction of rats (who eat puffin eggs) onto some islands used for nesting. Rendered in DAZ Studio3.
