Description
This is the road north of Kalapana**, which was destroyed in the last eruption of the Kilauea Volcano. We walked about a mile to the end of the road, then hiked along the lava for another half mile or so. From there we could see a mile or so south where the lava was flowing into the water. There were a couple of huge plumes of steam as it hit. Must be an awesome sight at night (I KNOW it is, since Errol and Dave posted so many fotos of that very thing!!)
I think driving might prove to be a little difficult!!
do zoom!!

Impressive...stay safe and have fun !!
I love that sign. Every time we go there, I laugh. There is another spot where you can see a car in the lava too. Isn't Hawaii an awesome place.... Great shots. Aloha
Isn't it amazing to see the beginning of time when the earth is forming. Nice capture.... Aloha
Nature is always so interesting and full of surprises
lovely collage x
Interesting to see how the lava stopped in two of the pics above right at the edge of the highway. Nicely done.
AMAZING! So interesting!
sqtunning !! excellent shot
Excellent work Marylin, I would love to see this at night, I know sharky has plenty in his gallery but its just not the same as being there in person. Superb collage. Bravo!!!!!
You need a Hummer now sweetie to get any further, great vacation so much to see and snap, well done!
Yeah, that lava just seems to creep along like a giant blob consuming everything in its path. You've gotten some awesome captures while over there.
Just nature reminding us that SHE'S in charge! Cool shots!
AWESOME shots! "Don't MESS with MOTHER NATURE!" .... GRINS. T.P.
Wonderful image
This is what I'm talkin' about! We think we are the superior race and yet, nature is quick to let us know that whatever we do, she can undo on a whim. How exciting this is!
Fantastic collage!!
Detour, there's a muddy road ahead, Detour, pay no attention to what's said... Interesting photos in this collage of awesome onyx, M!
Impressive. That's the friendlier kind of lava: I don't know how to spell it, but the Polynesian word for it sounds like pahoiihoii which is the smoother, friendlier lava, as opposed to a'a which is the rougher kind. Apparently "a'a" is the sound you make when it hardens and cools and you walk over it with bare feet. Anyway, enough of that. This is a great series of shots and you really get a sense of its scale. Great work, I wish I could see that for myself...I have kind of a thing for lava, and during my childhood, I thought Chicago was overrated because there were no active, lava-spewing volcanoes in the area. This brings back those memories and that's a good thing.
Awesome collage. I bet that is a "must see for yourself" place.
