Description
Hurricane Ike's unwanted visit in September of last year caused billions in damage. Galveston is on the mend but there are still many empty storefronts on the historic Strand. The old First National Bank Building at 22nd and the Strand was built in 1878 and currently houses the Galveston Arts Center. The waterline is over 6 feet so anything that wasn't moved to the second floor was drenched.

Many of my friends are still waiting to complete their rebuilding. Problems like sand drifts in yards, trees that were drowned and now dying, roads facing permanent closures and communities being told they cannot rebuild because of future threats of flooding are still being dealt with. Ike was a long term blow to the Island and surrounding communities on the mainland. Its good to see someone bring this up as a reminder that it is not over.

MrsLubner and allisonbender are right. Galveston suffered quite badly, but didn't get the attention that New Orleans did after Katrina. There is still much to be done and we do tend to forget the disasters after a bit. Things are getting better and good tourist summer will sure help. Crowds looked pretty good during Spring Break.
A terrible thing, Roger. We sometimes get flooding here and certain areas are prone to 'Flash Floods', lethal things! (Cornwall, Devon etc) But, I don't thing ANYTHING on the scale of this. Picture full of memories.... Rob.

thank you for the reminder...in these tough economic times, rebuilding has to be exteremely hard. My heart goes out to those as well as all the people losing their homes and jobs

Ike was a nasty guy and left his ugly mark. I have a friend who is still trying to get his house fixed after Ike's visit--graphic reminder!!
