Description
This is a commissioned artwork for a book cover.
The book is the famous "A Princess of Mars" (first publishing 1912) the first chapter of the Barsoom/John Carter saga by Edgar Rice Burroughs (best known as the creator of the character Tarzan).
Currently the director Andrew Stanton is working with The Walt Disney Company to film the "A Princess of Mars" with a 2012 release date.
BTW: my Martian is exactly as the Burroughs book description.

We ALL know Disney will screw it up just because they WILL NOT ALLOW any nudity so Dejah Thoris' outfit is shot down. Heck, even you have her over-dressed. She wore fancy jewelry and nothing else in the first book. I remember that really well. LOL Other than that one flaw, it's fantastic! Damn, that must have taken ages! W00t, and some hoorahs,too! Kick-ass.

Wow! This is amazing stuff, in the spirit of Boris Vallejo and Frank Frazetta... Disney will render (arf!) this a big steaming pile of mince, and no mistake. Sanitised down and modernised to suit modern sensibilties and tastes. Amazing image though!

A nice image with a few errors that will immediately be apparent to any longtime Edgar Rice Burroughs fan. (1) Dejah Thoris has crimson skin, not Caucasian pink. On all Barsoom, there are only two Caucasians-- John Carter and an RAF pilot who made the trip in 1940. The vast majority of Barsoomians have red skin. Isolated cultures have golden skin, ebon skin (the Omean Pirates), or are albinos (the Holy Therns). (2) Dehjah's hair is shown very short. Traditionally she has either long flowing hair or an elaborate coiffure. In a culture without clothing, hair is a way to show status. (3) Jewelry is another way to denote status. While you're correct in showing her mostly nude, I suspect a princess would be wearing more than just a metal halter. Probably she'd be wearing a thin jeweled belt that might also serve as a G-string. (Okay, she may have been stripped of most of her royal harness by her captors prior to this.) (4) John Carter has black hair. As an old Cavalry officer, he'd probably keep it trimmed a lot shorter than the length shown here. (5) Overall, the male looks more like he'd fit into Pellucidar rather than Barsoom. With his hair, coloration, and furry kilt, he'd probably serve better as David Innes, the hero of ERB's Pellucidar series. (6) The Thark or Warhoon-- you gave him humanoid ears. The Green Men of Barsoom have short trumpet-like ears located atop their heads. Can't tell if he has short tusks or not but Green Men should have enlarged canine teeth extending from their lower jaws. Not so sure about JC's sword. Carter would more likely use a sabre than a scimitar but I'll assume its something John picked up somwhere in these ruins.
@DavidEMartin Yes, all true, I know, but I've take some artistic freedom... much more less than many other artists that worked on some Barsoom/John Carter images during the decades ;)
