Description
I saw these shortly after my return to Chicago. I was still reeling from culture shock, jetlag, and the absence of really good beer. Corey and I were invited to a birthday celebration on the south side of the city: not too far from where I'd grown up. I learned that they're Persian in origin--far more delicate and artistically exciting than anything the Persians were capable of, if you watch American jingoistic films like "300". Thankfully, films like 300 aren't considered gems of historical, anthropological, and sociological accuracy.
As always, thank you for viewing and reading and commenting. Hopefully everyone is having a great weekend, or at least the start of one.

Wow, these are gorgeous and your foto does them great justice.
Gorgeous capture! These are exquisite pieces.
Exquisitely beautiful knives, and a great arrangement and capture!
fascinating ... as is your gallery ... will have to look more closely later!
Indeed, very fine artistry on the casing. I also struck by how the gem stones seem to shine so well in the ambient lighting. Not to sound too blood thirsty but it is a shame that the blade of one is not visible. I'm sure it's design is equally impressive.
Excellent craftmanship
Persian culture is fabulous, and these are just gorgeous! Thanks for sharing them with us.
This came out beautifully! I can remember looking at these knives in our friend's attic and being amazed at the detailing on them. I couldn't, however, see the full detailing in the weak lighting of the room and am frankly shocked at how much more I can see in your photo. How DID you get this to come out so well in such bad light? Amazing!
Beautiful.
Wonderful eye cathy craftmenship. Great shot.
lol, Corey: I wasn't even there and I have the same question: If you shot these in poor lighting, how did you get this detail? It looks like the kind of shot art-publishers do for art books, capturing museum artifacts while in their display cases. Very finely done. And the knives are in fine condition too. Persian art was one of the high points in the many arts of the Middle East (they still have a classical music that is played very little in the world today, and it's one of the great classical musics of the world). And the jingoism of popular western media is to be utterly ignored, I agree. It must be nice to come across these unexpectedly, in an attic in someone's S.Side Chicago home. Not something one expects to find. Fine work Chip. Like a photograph for a museum catalog, truly.
What a beautiful pic of this exquisite objects! the Persians produced a huge amount of gorgeous stuff whilst we British were still painting ourselves with woad (or wearing Nike)
Thay are beautiful and you really did them justest
Very nice setting and splendid knives. Bravo :0)
Beautiful twins,completely well detailed.Two art pieces,indeed! It´s a superb photo.Thank you.
Great capture!
exquisite! and how DID you capture such marvelous detail in poor lighting?
Love this kind of stuff. These are of post Mohmmad manufacture, and you know from their famous carpets and the dazzling artwork that surrounded the Shah, that they had some fine artisans in those days. The ancient, and fortuously and repeatedly halted Persian empire predates these knives by about 2000 years, and back then they definitely did not have anything like this, nor did anyone else.
