Description
Mayo is a county that was hit harder than most in Ireland with the famines, and I was struck how many abandoned buildings were scattered all over the county, seemingly still left as they dont appear to have any owners despite the many land reforms that followed.
There are numerous reminders of the Great Famine to be seen on the Mayo landscape: workhouse sites, famine graves, sites of soup-kitchens, deserted homes and villages and even traces of undug 'lazy-beds' in fields on the sides of hills.
Many roads and lanes were built as famine relief measures. There were nine workhouses in the county: All around where I spend a lot of my time when in Ireland at Ballina, Ballinrobe, Belmullet, Castlebar, Claremorris, Killala, Newport, Swinford and Westport.

Wonderful Irish charm. Perfect postcard.
Stunning image, and narrative. Great work!
What a beautiful and touching landscape! As Bill said, getting off the beaten path sometimes yields the most wonderful experiences. This is so lovely. I have commented this same on other recent posts and in case you haven't seen it... Go to ThomSchuyler.com and go to the listen page, 6th song down on the list is the song "This Old House". Worth a download and a favorite song of mine. This image is perfect for that song!
Wonderful composition and a great scenic. Lovely!
Wonderful shot Daniel, is very beautiful.....!!!!!
Nice photo and info. A geography and history lesson. May I ask what a "lazy-bed" is?
Fantastic old building! and what a landscape!!! Superb!
excellent composition ! Thanks for the informations !
Looks like an amazing place. Wonderful composition.
super done
oh, beautiful. And your shot brings home a stunning fact, that as these famines & other disasters go on, nature continues to grow regardless. It's one of the juxtapositions of life we can't escape...The abandoned hut, here, is surrounded by plush landscape and a beautiful slope of hills, so it's hard to remember that that land was so ravaged by the potato famine, because it looks so beautiful now. Beautiful lines, rich dark hues and a lush feel. A beautiful shot.
A sad time but a lovely photo. The stone buildings are stronger than the poor.CC

Your Irish genes show in this gorgeous view you caught in county Mayo. I saw for myself how deep the marks left by the Great Famine have remained so far.
