Description
Alms House - Stydd - Lancashire
Bit more interest in Lancashire.
Ribchester is an small village in Lancashire which has the remains of an old Roman fortress.Just out side the village is a place called Stydd. The name 'Stydd' apparently just means 'place' or 'farm' an 'estate in land'
In 1728 under the terms of John Shireburne's will he wished to found and build "a good almshouse on his estate at Stydd for 'five poor old single women, professing the Roman Catholic religion' to live separately therein".
This rather peculiar building remains much the same today.

How very beautiful. The sweep of the sky is so compelling and the great view with the hedge introducing the scene is stunning.

Absolutely beautiful photo and postwork. It looks like it has been painted by one of the great masters. Exceptional work. It looks such a romantic place for a group of spinsters to live in.
