Description
Poles Apart
After everything
All the love
The tears
The connecting
And the disconnecting
After all was said and done
And it was time
To move on
You lied to me
Not a little white lie
But an elaborate
Grand scale lie
Crafted only for me
You must have known
I'd notice
When I mentioned it
Called you out
You confessed
Apologized
Asked my forgiveness
Forgiveness?
Forgiveness is
Irrelevant
Lying to me
You killed
Whatever love
I had left for you
And you are now
A part of my past
In a way you never were
Before
Forgiveness requires
Connection
Interaction
Investment
And we don't have that
If I carry you
For the rest of my life
Or if I leave you here
You will never know
And my forgiveness
Or lack of it
Will not help you at all
If you require forgiveness
My erstwhile friend
Perhaps the person
Who needs to forgive you
Is you

I've been pondering and discussing the concept of forgiveness, and this is the second of three poems on the subject. The first was posted in December, and at the time I didn't know it was the beginning of a trilogy! I promise the third one will be a bit more upbeat. :)
The first one is called HANGING ON

WOW! great poem and very hard words and thoughts! excellent!
This has so many layers, and yet says exactly what it was meant to say. "I'm sorry" just isn't nearly enough sometimes. And lying--there's a deal breaker if there ever was one.
Beautiful and sad poem, Tara.
Excellent. I used to tell my pupils that trust is like virginity: you lose it once and it can't be regained.
Wonderful image with a very interesting
extraordinary and very deep poem! Great!
How nice and deep poem
This is a thought provoking passage of text, I can relate to a lot of this viz, my ex wife, who told me some WHOPPERS!
You have quite a talent my dear!
A deeply moving poeam. Thank you!!! (although I'm not a very forgiving person. I agree with the comparison between virginity and trust!)
excellent writing!
Very thought provoking stuff ... I used to write a lot of poetry; some even published :) You have a way with poetry Tara...
sometimes the hardest is to forgive ourselves
Lovely green text image, and excellent prose, but, sorry, I can see you're upset, but believe me, I have never, ever, lied to you.....and, needless to say, you've hurt my feelings...
I love the poem.Excellent.
"Poles Apart" is a wonderfully descriptive title. The breakup of a relationship via deceit and shattered vows is a terrible, heart wrenching thing. You've portrayed this lengthy and possibly never-ending process to me and all who read your poem in 48 short lines. This piece is not harsh. It is helpful. It illuminates the biggest problems we have in relationships today...lack of open communications, fidelity and trust. Then you leave your reader challenged to think about his or her own thoughts, feelings and convictions concerning the entire subject of forgiveness. You've written a little poem with a big impact. Now, what is the reader to do next?
Excellent poem...I have a hard time forgiving...
I did not know you write Tara. I have to look out for your poems, realy good and meaningfull.
powerful, Tara, as was the earlier poem, and you state your feelings well, in small groups, little 'punches'...I've dealt with forgiveness a lot with people (in my work, etc) and I try to encourage more interaction than forgiveness since forgiveness is often too easy, too facile, and often doesn't change a whole lot. It almost seems like a 'voucher', something you hand over to someone and it takes care of everything. I think you're calling for something much deeper, and if that doesn't happen, then forgiveness just doesn't make it. Stylistically, you've once again used brief language and short lines to give your feelings punch. It's very emotionally effective. And sometimes when you end a stanza with a single word ("before") or two ("is you") you have a real feel for how brief language can give a rock-like conclusion to a feeling...
Very thought provoking Tara! I can only ponder about the content of your thoughts...
Very powerful. The line "Forgiveness is irrelevent" says so much of it to me. Sometimes, through much water under the bridge or through a single action, there is a shift. Numbness and indifference set in and the old is dead. This is a little less than upbeat, I'd better move on to the next. But before I do, after all this of ME and how I responded to your words (I have a bad habit of that), I totally agree with anahata.c's comments about the power and effectiveness of your brief language and short lines. You are a wonderful writer and as Bill said, engage the reader and stimulate thought.
