Description

"Mess as usual"!!! The Italian Railways decided to boycott the Carneval at Venice in revenge of a litigation about commuter trains with the Veneto Governor (Venice is the capital of the Veneto Region). Results: trains assaulted, police hardly managing to keep the stampede in check... a bloody hell! In spite of all the mess, Carneval has been a success: happiness, feasts, crowds enjoining the day, and Venetians shop-owners in their own business paradise (a very special corner of it!!) Well, about the costumes and masks. People can rent them for feasts (masks is compulsory), from 400 euros up, but the best (a photographer's dream) usually are self made, the process going on a year or more (every year improving the old costumes). Thank you to all people who appreciated the previous picture! Thank you for viewing and drop a note if you like!

Ahh..the collage is so interesting and so unusual for me. We have no history of this sort of carnival and masks. The look is surreal and appealing. I have opened this fine image then spent some time on a website telling the history of the carnival, from very old times to now. All is so facinating and I would truly love to be there..of course with a friend familiar with the city and the carnival. But first...to make the mask. This is splendid. Thank you very much.

aside from the comedy of the rail madness (which somehow seems fitting for Carneval, as riotous madness seems to be lurking in the heart of Carneval), your collage is giddy, lavish, immensely fun and very knowing. You really have the eye for these things, and you capture---whether through photograph or render---essential images. I've already commented on many of your Carneval images (I checked, though it was fun to re-visit them), and I'm depressed that there may not be many left, lol. But This is another series of captures that pop off the page & capture the essence of the event. The image top left is a riot of purples and silken surfaces (they may be cheap fabrics made to look that way, I realize), where the masks are almost an afterthought. A giddy, true capture. The two below are marvelous "serious" visions of pompous yet sensuous figures, including that lion-like king with his staff and latin book (I should be able to read it but I can't, my Latin is too old---I assume it's Latin & not medieval Italian---but he feels like the perennial authority figures that show up at these cross-quarter ceremonies, like admonitions. And the top right lovers are perfect, with those wonderful masks and poses (like they posed for you---people probably pose more ostentatiously when they're wearing masks): It has an archetypal feel, like a pose for a poster for a Renaissance play. The altogether lavish and gold-encrusted mask below---with all that blue flourish around the face! The best! And another collection of masks at bottom (two opposite corners, I assume a design choice), with more flourish around them where the headdresses, feathers, beards, etc, are as dominating as the masks. (Those look like feather beards. If they are, bravo to the costume makers.) Wonderful collection, you've a real eye for this, and each of these could be an upload in themselves. I'm sure there's a carnival inside you to sense & capture these things as well as you do. I loved this series, and next time back I'll see if I missed any (I probably have). I was tired before I returned online tonight, but now I'll never get to sleep, lol. Terrific upload all around.

Thank you ever so much. Seeing them here is the next best thing to being there. Venice is a trip anyway, and the carnival adds immesurably to it, and probably makes that the only time each year, when the city becomes just a prop, an interesting backdrop, rather than the photographic 'main course' for the visitor.
