Description
Compassion
To know the difference
between pity
and compassion
is to tread the thin line
between alienation
and involvement.
Pity stands aloof,
removed, indifferent,
even hostile.
Compassion assimilates
the pain and suffering,
the fear, anger,
or desperation
of others.
But true compassion
has a detachment
beyond indifference,
an impartiality that slices
through the clutter to act,
not in self interest
or in line with
ingrained prejudices,
but in selfless consideration
and understanding
of the needs of others.
Involved or removed,
detached or indifferent,
selfless or self-serving?
How do I know
which side
of the line
I tread?

EMPATHY Excellent poem and image. Please send this to all of the world "leaders".
Wonderful words and image
Absolutely superb, both your wonderful words and the beautiful photo!
beautiful.
Wonderfully written, accompanying photo is a piece of art in it's own right...well done!
Ahhh ... I can answer your question, but only from my own experience. On the pity side of the line, I feel a bit smug. With detatched compassion, I feel calm and centered. I believe there's an element of negative judgment involved with pity that isn't there with detatched compassion. An excellent poem, and food for thought.
My thought is: pity feels small because it contains so little while compassion feels big as it can holds so much. One resides in the ego while the other originates in the heart. Being lost in one, especially pity, while aware of the other yet unable to feel it to me is called human suffering. You wrote a very beautiful and touching poem, you must know both worlds well.
Absolutely outstanding work in both pros and your image. Both touch the heart at a wonderful soul level.
It's very difficult to balance the two, you write about that conflict eloquently. The foto is beautiful!!
So very well said and I do love this snap too. I also agree totally with your philosophy on the subject. Kudos!
I like this! Great work!
Yes both are wonderufl!
Photo looks great! It has an abstract quality that works really well with your poetry. I create visuals because I'm a not very good w/ words. It's refreshing to see someone talented at both.

A poet too? Well done, very well written and poetic.
No matter what side of the line we walk my friend...we still follow a line...I walk the line...sometimes I stray to the left...sometimes to the right...and sometimes...I get it straight :) Very intellegent words...love ya man!
like the alien movies super photo I have written most of the fellow Dutch to find out if pity can be translated into Dutch.. I think we do not have such word.. and therefor the text would not be translatable.. Perhaps... it is "Deernis..." Medeaval Dutch.. ancient.. and grey If the other Dutch agree I would be able to make an image for it.
You use so wonderful pictures to go along with your poems. Both are well done.
