Description
Al Abrar Mosque is located on Telok Ayer St. in Chinatown, Singapore. The first structure of the present day mosque was built in 1827 by Chullia, Tamils (Moslem Indians) from the Coromandel Coast of South India. It was known, and is often still referred to, as Kuchu Palli, Tamil for 'hut mosque'. The Chullia came to present day Singapore in the earliest days of the 19th century and were mostly traders and moneylenders. The current structure was built between 1850 and 1855 and had major renovations in 1986 and again in 1989. The mosque is oriented towards Mecca and Telok Ayer St. was originally along the waterfront overlooking the sea before land reclamation. The current location is in the middle of Chinatown. Chinese did not arrive in Singapore until between the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.
This picture was taken in January 1996 and later scanned.

Pretty good shot, thanks for the info!
Splendid composition and colors my friend!
Very cool story behind this. Nice capture!
Moneylenders? I thought Moslems did not believe in credit? So this is a shift.
Beautiful architecture..great capture and story! love it :)

Thanks for the info and wonderful capture sig..
Nice capture; it's a beautiful building, albeit stuck in the middle of a lot of other average-looking ones. I guess space is at a premium...
Unusual to see a Mosque right in the middle of those other terrace houses and a residential area ! Interesting mix of old and new, plus all the info ! ~Cheers~
An interesting read as usual and a fascinating Mosque. Thanks for sharing Sig!
Excellent capture my friend and thank you for sharing all the information of this building.
Nice, very nice pic!
Interesting read and building Sig, I have to smile at tallpindo's comment about credit, they don't drink or gamble either, but I see some coming out of the bookies and pubs in Rochdale. One of my neighbours is a heavy drinker as well. Excellent capture, it beats me how they keep the white buildings so clean looking. Bravo!!!!!
