Description
Nikon 7900 pocket camera, hand-held image.
I have seen a number of these little guys recently. It is a Datana contracta Moth caterpillar and is about 1 3/4 inches (4.5cm) long. There are several Datana species and I think all of them assume this posture when disturbed. I am not sure why they think it will help, lol. I have no information that the hairs are toxic in any manner so it seems rather ineffectual.
Thanks to those who take the time to comment.

It's pretty scarey though... lol. Great shot :)
EXCELLENT CAPTURE & DETAIL :)
Gutsy little thing. Like it would have a chance against the bottom of my foot! LOL The clear view of this behavior is very interesting.
The caterpillar reminds me of a flamenco dancer. Beautiful capture!
