Description
Here's the Reddish Hermit from my upcoming Amazon collection. Hermits as you would expect are close cousins to hummingbirds. This hermit is found in Northern and Central South America in the entire Amazon Basin to the foothill drainages of the eastern Andes slope. It is the smallest of the hermits measuring only 3 inches (7.5 cm) from head to tail. Unlike it's hummingbird cousins, hermits do not show strong sexual dimorphism-- with this hermit the banding upper chest/neck shows its' a male. Hermits, like hummingbirds feed on nectar from flowers and eat an occassional insect.
Hermits usually form leks and congregate on traditional display grounds, where females visit to choose a mate. However, male hermits are less aggressively territorial than other male hummingbirds.
