Description
One of the most beautiful of the Buzzard family and as a native of America referred more as a Hawk to save confusion to the Buzzards or Vulture group, as its Latin name suggests a very regal bird of prey.
This is the largest of the buteos and is often mistaken for an eagle due to its size, proportions and behaviour. As with all birds of prey, the female is larger than the male, but there is some overlap between small females and large males in the range of measurements. Length ranges from 20 to 26 inches (51 to 66 cm) with an average of 23 inches (58 cm), wingspan from 48 to 60 inches (122 to 152 cm) with an average of 56 inches (142 cm), and weight from 2.2 to 4.5 pounds (998 to 2,041 g).
Adults have long broad wings and a broad grey, rusty or white tail. The legs are feathered to the talons, like the Rough-legged Hawk. There are two colour forms:
Light morph birds such as this one are rusty brown on the upper parts and pale on the head, neck and underparts with rust on the legs and some rust marking on the underwing. The upper wings are grey. The "Ferruginous" name refers to the rusty colour of the light morph birds.

Beautiful image and capture Danny, excellent well done..
A mastershot. Outstanding details and wonderful expression. Looks fantastic!
The yellow color on the upper beak and corners of the mouth are startling and the gentle ticking on the head and back of the neck are great. I love the way you caught the light to bring out that cut of feathers over the eye with the sweep towards the back of the head. Stunning presentation of a stunning bird.
Beautiful capture!!

Wonderful hawk and soft mood!!!
~ Great capture, excellent work! ~ ROBY ;o)
Another fine capture Danny, why can't they call it a Rusty Hawk and have done with it, I can hardly get my mouth round Ferruginous. Lol. I must say it is an awesome looking bird though, I see a speck of red on its breast, has it just been fed I wonder? There is nothing around the beak but it does look like a drop of blood. Superb image and presentation. Bravo!!!!!
