Description
Yesterday was the first day after 11 consecutive days with temperatures of 110F or more when the high reached only 109F. This coincided with an increase in humidity and thunderstorms, the usual indicators of the arrival of our monsoon. This fire in the southwestern Phoenix area on the Gila River Indian Reservation was sparked by lightning at about 16:30. Even though at the time this picture was taken (yesterday around 17:15) it was only about 100 acres in size, the smoke plume is several thounsand feet high. The mountains on the right are the Sierra Estrellas (up to over 4,000-ft high). On the left is some of the cumulus build-up southeast of Phoenix that is associated with the monsoon.
The fire is still being fought today and the pollution from the burning Salt Cedar spread across the entire city. During the night the wind changed and now the entire area west of the city, including the White Tank Mountains, are also in smoke haze. Not a good day for air quality.
This picture was taken on 25 June 2008.

What a great capture. Too bad about all these fires lately. Yes, bad air quality for sure. In Hawaii, we have the VOG. Which is volcanic haze. Not very good either. But, it has to be better than all the smoke from the fires. Wonderful shot. Aloha
Oh Sig wunderbach mein Freund! For me immediatly!
...ein großartiges Foto! Leider sind es keine Wolken sondern Rauchschwaden. Wie Du erwähnst, nicht gerade gut für die Umwelt!
informative and impressive image sig.
I had a moment of blind panic until I located Gila Bend on map. I had it in my mind it was much closer to Casa Grande and Coolidge than it turned out to be. I love Casa Grande (and the gourd farm I do business with is also in that area) and I scattered my "other" dad's ashes on the site of an abandoned mine in Coolidge where his cousins live. I couldn't imagine what was there that was combustable but what the heck...still didn't want to lose ... ashes? Well that's absurd, now that I think if it...:-I I do love this shot. I have a few shots of flash floodstorms on the horizon headed at the speed of a freight train at us while camping in Aguila and its such a thrill to see that. the fact that the storms were sucked up into the sky before they hit us was even more thrilling! Wonderful shot of the wildfire
great capture ..man thats hot!!!
fantastic capture! Super work!
Fantastic capture! The colour in that plume is incredible! Listening to the news the last few nights around here and knowing that in Cali alone we have over 800 fires (most sparked by dry lightning) it's a frightening and sobering thought about just how powerful a force Mother Nature really is.
Impressive scene..magnific capture Sig! :)
fantastic colors, light and perfect
love how the red is in the smoke too. a wondeful shot. take care and be safe
excellent capture Sig.
A lot of atmospheric interest. Big enough to give a good scan.
Bless y'alls hearts! Such a hard time to go through. Quite a shot and I hope things improve for you and all the folks in California, too.
Fantastic capture.
he heat out there as been horrible so far this yea and not a whole ot better on the southern east cost where we have fire issues as well. Beautiful shot!
~Impressive~ Where I live is extremely hot too (Monterrey, Mexico). And this reminds me when the Mountains have set on fire... days of fire & smoke, pretty scary. Wish You well!! ^5^
Impressive shot ! Fires are always very scary. i hope they will stop it very soon !
nice view
Very interesting photo. The cloud is quite awesome.
Hope your Monsoons come soon... Excellent shot!!!!!
Impressive scene! Excellent shot!
Excellent capture.
I made a comment on one of PJ's this morning about how much I was complaining with the relentless rain we had in the NorthWest of England yesterday and then I had heard of relentless heat and the fires. Its a great shot Sig very impressive!
That sure looks like Hell on earth to me Sig, a very dramatic capture, I feel for the people that live near to this, it must be very hard to breath. Us Brits are always going on about the weather, looking at things like this we should be thankful. It is not often that we get fires like this, it is bad sometimes when the peat catches fire, that can burn for months underground, but we never get them with such magnitude of this one. Excellent job of capturing this Sig Bravo!!!!!
superb shot !!!!
Excellent photo!!! :)
seems like every time I fly to Nevada Arizona has a forest fire somewhere that can be seen from the air.I can imagine the people close to the fire worrying about their homes
wow..what an impressive photo..and the info, as well..! :)
Great capture.
