Description
This North American P-51 'Mustang' is getting ready to take to the air at the Reading, PA air show. There are numerous flying P-51s still around. The P-51 was used in Europe as a long-range bomber escort for B-17s and B-24s and later in Japan for B-29s.
This is not only a beautiful aircraft, the sound the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine makes is pure music.
My buddy Rob and I have gone to airshows in Pennsylvania, New York, Texas, Nevada, Arizona and Reno, also in Nevada, and there are always several P-51s present.
In 1997, the 50th anniverary of the USAF as a separate branch, the legendary Chuck Yeager flew a P-51 at Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, Nevada.
At the annual Reno Air Races, the unlimited class always includes highly modified Mustangs like 'Strega' and 'Dago Red', and Bearcats like 'Rare Bear' which race on a triangular, roughly seven mile course and achieve speeds of near 500 miles an hour, and sometime exceed it.
This picture was taken on 3 June 2006.

our own little travelin' man ! :) you do get around. Great shot of this historic plane!!
nice shot...
fantastic.... my father flew them in ww2.... interestingly, by the end of the war, each p-51 pilot had his own plane, and, while one leave, he could fly it wherever (within the u.s.) he wanted.
...schöne Aufnahme!
Military aircraft, Formula I racing, and travel are my passion!!!!
As far as travel is concerned, it is not how much I have seen, rather how much is there still to be seen. As far as military aircraft (read loud and fast) I will never get enough, same with Formula I racing, Sig...
superb plane, excellent shot.
Super looking plane! Excellent capture my friend!
Glorious old girl Sig!! Great image and history! :)
Too beautifull... again a fabulous capture Sig!
Great to see these wonderful aircraft still taking to the skies. Tony :-)
excellent capture of this beauty, those RR engines in them made the P-51 lightning fast, thanks for sharing.
I went at Quebec City to see the acrobat airplane show, it was fantastic! I know that it's not the same then you. But i like the plans..Fantastic capture. Thanks :) (excuse my bad english)
Wonderful photo! :)
That got style :-) Nice shot !
Greetings Siegfried, I love vintage aircraft! THe P-51 was a true challenge for the Luftwaffe's ME-109, especially those piloted by the Black Airman to protect the B-17 bombers. Thank you for sharing. Sorry, but I forgot how to spell the squadrons name of these Black African American pilots. Thank you for sharing. egmont
The efforts to clip the wings and add Rolls-Royce Griffons to imitate late Spitfires has created a sub breed that never was in WW-II.
Funny you mention Mustangs. I just got this link from a friend of mine... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=iCz3BA-oNlY This is a great shot. I really love the pov. It shows off its sleak lines.
i heard of this plane and guess saw some in the old WW2 war movies and doc. shows too. this is a wonderful shot you took of it
Just watched a show about thes yesterday. Fabulous machine. Very nice shot.
Another great shot. My dad used to fly piper cubs when I was a baby. My first "car" was a Mustang. Wicked looking flying machine. Aloha
As they say...they just don't make them like they used to...I also enjoy and appreciate almost anything mechanical and historical...
Nice shot. I collect nose art Glamorous Gal.
Can't get much more classic than the P-51's. A standard and mainstay at every airshow that I've ever gone to. Beauitful pieces of aircraft and what a thrill to see them fly. Thank you so much for sharing this pic!
A wonderful catch, Sig! Thanks for describing so perfectly. I can hear the sound...must be pure pleasure.... Some days ago they flew the old Ju- 52 again for some rounds here in Berlin. I hope to try some snapshots... That growling sound is unbelievable.... Bye!
Super to see this!
Great bird, great shot!
Excellent capture Sig, love that bit of motion blur on the prop. A friend of mine is on the ground crew of the 'Sally B' he has a personal number plate of B-17 on his car and attends most of the air shows that the plane flys at. I keep meaning to go myself but have never got around to it yet. It's on my 'To Do' list. Mind you I am on volume 64 of my to do lists.lol. Superb work and a very interesting narrative. Bravo!!!!!
got some catching up to do sig i`m so far behind :o)..i think the older generation planes have much more character than the modern ones ,far to sophisticated .excellent capture of this beauty mick
I love the ground trembling when these p51's do a low flyover. amazing aircraft and superb capture
