Description
British Railway's Intercity 125 is waiting at King's Cross Station, London, to depart for Edinburgh, Scotland. This is the first time that I had travelled on a fast train like this. The 125 is the world's fastest DIESEL powered train. I was exited about this trip and was going to varify the speed by checking mile markers against elapsed time, which I usually did on trains between Berlin and Amsterdam. However, this train was travelling so fast that I never saw the mile markers and became dizzy. So I just settled back and clocked the arrival and departure times at the four scheduled intermediate stops and the arrival at Weaverley Station, Edinburgh. Distance ~400 miles.
Depart at King's Cross 10:00AM
Arrive at Peterborough 10:46AM
Depart Peterborough 10:49AM
Arrive York 12:00PM
Depart York 12:07PM
Arrive Darlington 12:35PM
Depart Darlington 12:42PM
Arrive Newcastle 13:00PM
Depart Newcastle 13:13PM
Arrive Weaverley, Edinbburgh 14:46PM
There was work on tracks at certain areas between Newcastle and Edinburgh.
The train departed on time and arrived on time. A great ride, very smooth and enjoyable.
This picture was taken on 3 October 1988 and later scanned.

A comment to my uploads. With the exception of a few sunsets, all my pictures are photos of opportunity, i.e. travel pictures. I usually record what I see and have no control over the conditions of what I photograph. Also, all pictures taken between 1985 and 2002 were taken with a pocket-sized Olympus which was easy to carry.

Those things are still running? neat
Yes they are!
wow if ever i get there i going to get on this train just to ride. cool looking shot
excellent capture, i have yet to ride on a train of that speed !!
Wow, the train I took from London to Edinburgh took FOREVER to get there - this would have been so much better! Although it was much easier to see a lot of the countryside we passed through...hmm. A tradeoff, I guess...
An amazing speed! You have to wonder what the result would be if there was a rail accident at that speed. We have plenty or rail accidents here so that would be something to consider. It is a very interesting shape. Impressive shot!
I like your travel photos a lot, Sig, and each one comes with a great story, too!
looks like it has been around the block many times.excellent capture Sig
Great photo! And fantastic information to boot.
very nice shot.
....das ist mal ein schöner IC !!! Wunderbare Bahnhofsaufnahme!
Absolutely stunning image
Fantastic photo and story,
well first let me thank you sig and yes i love trains :o)..the virgin pendolino trains class 220 are much smoother and are electric although still only travel at the same speed at times close to 125 .the east coast mainline which is what you came on to london is mostly electric now aswell .the latest versions of this train are diesel/electric engines .thanks for the dedi sig and what a cracking shot this is :o) mick made a mistake and deleted comment and reposted this comment :o)
wonderfully informative!
Excellent shot and interesting infos. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful shot... They've improved greatly since the last time I was there!!!
Nice capture!! Well done.
Well Sig, I travelled on this to York and I'd booked a seat but someone objectionable sat in it before I found it so I had to stand all the way! As you say it was a smooth ride, but an Eastern family had bought a large bucket of fried chicken and as they ate it they spread the bones and skin over the carpet which was still spanking new.
Fantastic capture and thanks for the info!
LOL, yep the old 125 is a fast beast Sig, but the new ones are better, I used to use this platform to travel from London to Derbyshire, was a fantastic ride...Nice POV to this one my friend!
This just goes to show how complacent we can become, I would not have given this a second glance, much less photograph it. To me it is just another train, yet if it was a steam train I would be all over it with the camera. A great pov for this shot Sig, looking at the clock you still had twenty minutes to wait to start your journey. Excellent capture and a wonderful dedication for Mick. Bravo!!!!!
Obviously quite an old photograph as these have been repainted at least twice since then , but a good shot, well done
Great image and lovely dedi Sig! Well done... :)
old station and modern train a meeting of the times great shot:)
Great capture and loved the narrative... Never seen this train but definately one I would like a ride on one day...
Great train ! Nice station too ! Every thing is clean !
Ah, souvenir, souvenir. Thank you for sharing !
NICE................
I like this capture because I recognise the train Sig, funny how we sometimes don't take much notice of things we see very often. I don't get to travel overseas that much but I'm going to make sure I will get a shot of trains in other countries whenever I can in future. I did once travel from Luxor to Cairo over night, it travelled slow and took 9 hours but was more modern than some trains in britain. no picture though!
