Description
Nikon 7900 pocket camera - hand held images.
This week I plan on posting images various images of reptiles.
On this day almost 2 weeks ago, I had to be up way too early and had to make a 2 hour drive so I could undergo an entire day's worth of various bone scan and imaging procedures.
I am not an early riser, more than an hour in a car is not good for my back. All I had to look forward to was a long boring day and a fair amount of discomfort due to all the driving - so I was not in the best of moods.
This chunky Skink was not having his best day either. Unfortunately he had been seen by my cat. On the way to my truck, I noticed the cat was very interested in something. Fortunately (for the Skink) I took the time to investigate and managed to rescue him.
I had very little extra time but of course, I had to take a few pics, lol.
This is a male Broad-headed Skink. They are usually entirely olive bronze in color. The red on his face and head are mating colors. In the biggest males, their entire head can be a bright fiery orange-red.
I see a lot more of the young than the adults. The young are olive tan with long black stripes running the length of their bodies and they have bright blue tails that can detach from the body as a means of distraction while they get away.
This guy was probably about a foot long (including tail). They can live for up to 10 years.
They are one of the very few Skinks that protect their eggs.
Anyway, this guy had been roughed up by my cat, then manhandled by me so I forgave him for his initial surly attitude. Anyway, he gave me more of a pinch than a bite, lol. I have had numerous Skinks and Anole lizards clamp on to one of my fingers. They don't break the skin, but if you look closely, you can see he has a pretty good grip on my finger, lol.
He relaxed pretty quickly and let me take a few more pics when he was a little calmer. I will post those tomorrow.
Thanks to those who take the time to comment.

Super 'action' shots and narrative, Lee. He certainly had every right to be angry!

Fabulous shots! He is a fine looking skink and these shots are so sharp!
Very cool captures. He looks quite irritated and rightfully so. Poor guy. Excellent series. Bunny
On the way to an hospital appointment and the camera comes along, so you can take your snaps whilst the hospital takes theirs, I like it. It seems you are ambidextrous as well Lee? as it looks like you took these shots with your left hand? Or is it just that this is the first time I have noticed? It has only just come to me that I have never seen a left handed camera, this could well be a topic for the forum. Superb tryptich Lee, I look forward to the more amiable shots you took of this handsome chap. Excellent capture and presentation. Bravo!!!!! Hope the results are good news for you.
I love lizards (especially Anoles) and you have some fantastic photos here! Thank you for rescuing this skink from your kitty (something I have to do frequently with my monster of a cat also). Keep up the great work! (also, I linked here from bugguide.net in case you are one who likes to know how people stumble upon you)
