Description
Nikon 7900 pocket camera - hand held image.
This species is one of my favorite Dragonfly subjects. They are not overly skittish, they frequently land, and they are very colorful.
I hope you will take the time to view the large image. The details are quite nice.
I am pretty sure this is a female but it is possible that it is an immature male. The males start with this color pattern but their eyes and tails turn blue when they become sexual mature. Until that happens one needs a clear view of the tip of the tail to make a positive determination of gender.
Tomorrow will be another view of the same subject.
Thanks to those who take the time to comment.

Fantastic image! I love the definition and DOF as well as the sense of color. I know the tip of the abdomen trick with insects, but I'm unable to tell if this is male or female...but that doesn't matter, it's a gorgeous image! Fantastic work and I'm glad I saw it.
Absolutely fantastic! A beautiful creature, and one of the best macros I've seen! Way to go!
I seen some Damsel flies but no dragonfly yet. beautiful example and macro
Great shot. I spotted our first dragonfly of the season this week. It didn't slow down at all!
Beautiful capture and amazing macro.
You have got one steady hand my friend! Excellent image and the detail of the patterns on the wings just astounds me! WOW!!!! xx
Just awesome! GREAT POV.. looks like an aircraft ready for flight. Cool colors on this guy too.
The detail is incredible once again, I enjoy the fabulous quality to all your uploads and always read the added information with great interest. Thanks for sharing with us!
Excellent photograph! Well done.
Sensational when zoomed!!
Wow, this is just electrifying. the colors and the shine...the shimmer and the clarity, everything about this is marvelous.
You know Lee, I would love to see what you could acheive with a dedicated macro, the shots you take with this little pocket camera are truly outstanding. The quality of them is unbelievable. Once again the detail is superb, even the body hair standing out as individual hairs. An enjoyable view as always. Superb work. Bravo!!!!!
cool shot! you have the most interesting insect shots of any I have seen on here keep up the great work! My 2 year old grandson LOVES looking at your pics!
Beautiful, excellent shot!!
Perfect macro! Very well done!

You are lucky Lee to already have dragonflies around this time of the year... (this morning I saw my first butterfly for 2008...)
Splendid macro capture! Bunny
