Description
Portage Glacier Lake is located within the Chugach National Forest on Kenai Peninsula about 50 miles southeast of Anchorage, Alaska. The lake was created behind the terminal moraine of Portage Glacier as it began receding. This picture was taken from the Begich-Boggs Visitor Center.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s the glacier extended to this point. Today, the glacier is 6km southeast of the visitor center and a boat has to be taken to see it.
This picture was taken in August 1991 and was later scanned.

Oh Sig, really gorgeous... such splendid tones of blue my friend!
Absolutely splendid image Sig. I love the hues of blue! It does look bitterly cold though! Great work. xx
beautiful shot of a beautiful place...=]
Wonderful! Even if I stil travelled ,too cold to go here!
fantastic capture my friend, excellent image
Splendid view Sig, another amazing place in this world. I always notice Alaska being so vast on the North American map but can't imagine it to be a highly populated place at all. Looks a beautiful place, way too cold for me!
Lovely image! 5+!
Fantastic ! I'm cold now :-) Great view and compo !
so wonderful looking
A bit too cold for me Sig, I never used to bother about the cold when I was working, you could see me out in a snow storm with a short sleave shirt on, but not anymore. Now it's a case of wrap up warm, I have slowed down a lot though, so that could have something to do with it. Lol. Excellent capture and interesting information, where will it be in the next century? Bravo!!!!!
stunning image!
Amazing place Sig and great photography
I've never made it to Alaska, but i hope to some day. This is beautiful!
Breathtaking! Such an astonishing sight...a look into the so very distant past. Gosh you have seen such wonderful things! Stellar shot.
The glacier ice is so beautifully blue....nice image...
Breathtaking image -- stunning!
Impressive image , this is really beautiful Sig , Ana
I don't know about the water temperature, but the ambient air temperature was in the mid 60s in the afternoon and it was very pleasant. But this lake is evidence of global warming, whether man-caused or a natural, inter-ice age cycle, who knows.
Great shot! The postwork was well done, the result is gorgeous! My congratulations!!! A hug from Argentina!! my friend!!!! ROBY
Beautiful image!
superbe !!!
Amazing!!!!5+++
to think the air temp was that with all that ice about .excellent capture sig :o) mick
breath taking beauty
Beautiful shot. This is a lot more ice than I saw two years ago in June. It's sad that in a decade or two all the glaciers may be gone.
The blue hues absolutely in step with the cold objects.
This wonderful glacier and its icebergs could very well be Icelandic! I am amazed by the black lava that also reminds me of what I saw in Iceland. This is an amazing and gorgeous capture, Sig!
Beautiful picture!
