Description
Taormina is located on a terrace of Mt. Tauro overlooking the sea and the fuming Mt. Etna. Taormina is generally considered the most picturesque town in Sicily. This picture shows Taormina and Mt. Etna as seen from the Greek Theatre.
Taormina was founded by the Siculians and was a favored settlement of a long line of Sicily's conquerors and colonizers.
Under the Greeks, who moved here after Naxos was destroyed during colonial wars in the 5th century BC, Taormina flourished.
It later came under Roman dominion and eventually became the capital of Byzantine Sicily, a period of grandeur which ended abruptly in 902 AD when the town was conquered and destroyed by Arab invaders.
The town remained an important centre of art and trade throughout the various periods of Norman, Spanish, and French rule in Sicily.
Taormina has long been frequented by the European jet set and is one of the more expensive and touristed towns in Sicily (Lonely Planet, Italy, 1993).
This picture was taken on 7 July 2007.

This POV gives the scale of Mt. Etna, Siegfried. I have read a couple of novels about Vesuvius, but this looks much more occupied today. Just like Spain. They build new houses everywhere. Warm regards from a cold Glasgow, John.
