Description
This is an old image, taken with an old Minolta DImage 100, August 2003 near Gettysburg, Penn., USA. This was the 140th reenactment of the Battle of Gettysburg, a turning point in the Civil War (the war between the states) in the USA during 3 days of July, 1863.
I see this not as entertainment but as a reenactment of memory I do not have..a touch of the heart to those there. Generals and aides and signalmen stand on a hill at the dawn of a new day, overlooking the battle in progress just to the left of the photo view. (Perhaps 14,000 men in ranks, formed in battle lines and moving forward, backward, facing one another recreated the battle of the day.)
All in all, about 53,000 troops died in the 3 days of fighting. Compared to current military losses, this is many more and way too many. A single person lost is too many. The war was tereribly costly and other Civil War battles offered historians similar numbers.
This old photo was on an external hard drive and I decided to work and post it. People are people what ever the time might be. Death is death. War is war.

Very well done. Nice commentary as well.
This is truly stellar! The mood, the composition...all is heavy. Exceptional work.
very nice...
Great atmosphere, you almost feel as though you are there.
Fantastic picture! I would love to see that reenactment, largest battle ever fought in North America...
Gorgeous mood and B§W Tom!
Splendid photo!!!.
Stark and dismal. Whether the battle is won or lost it is a bad day when a life is taken. I think of our brave young men, 4000 now, who have lost their lives in a dirty desert war. Bad days from here on out for Moms, Dads, Sweethearts, Wives and Children. On one of my quests for adventure I found an old house for sale. I stopped to inquire about it, and the owner told me of an old confederate graveyard at the top of the hill behind it. I don't know what I expected, but I climbed the hill to see. It was more of a small mountain. When I got to the top I found that it had been lovingly tended with a flag and toppled stones put upright. My eyes were teary as I looked at the many graves markers with no names on most. It was so quiet. I could almost feel their ghosts at the top of that lonely hill. I know that sounds strange, but I felt something. I got lost coming down the hill and ended up far away from my original destination, but it was worth every step. They were strangers to me, brave young men who died fighting for what they thought was right. I felt sad and proud and so many other things. That is how this picture makes me feel. Thanks for the story and the picture and for allowing me to ramble on.
awesome, to remembering hell...
