Description
Chopping Wood
So, today, there I was
Chopping, cutting
Slicing and dicing
Wood
I have my trusty
Power saw
My pruning shears
And my brand new
Great big
Lopping shears
And I get to work
All these branches
Limbs twigs pieces of wood
From my apple trees
That I’ve been pruning
These last couple of months
It’s a LOT of work
Cuz I have a LOT of trees
And sometimes I wonder
How many times this wood
Warms me up
Because this is the way it works
First the tree has to grow
Then it grows too much
Gets too big
So I have to trim it down
With all those tools I just mentioned
So, there’s the first warm up
Once I’ve trimmed those trees
I have all this wood
On the ground
So I start chopping
Cutting slicing dicing
That wood
And I get warmed up again
But nope not done yet
Cuz now that wood has to
Be moved again
Some of it’s too big for
The little tools
So out come the
BIG BOYS
The power tools and
They finish the job
BUT, nope, not done yet either
NOW it has to be stacked
So I move it again
So it can dry
And be ready
When I need it
Have you lost count
That’s 3 times
It’s warmed me up so far
And we’re not done yet
Because you can’t burn it now
It’s too wet too green
It sits out for months
Till next fall
When I stack it again
That’s number 4
The 4th time it’s warmed me up
Then, finally, really
I bring some of that wood into the house
Start a fire
Throw it on
And it warms me up
Again~ finally~really~ this is the best warmth of all

Wow which for a beautiful Pic!!!Greeting Rocksy
That sure is a lot of pruning there, but Mother Nature provides you warmth with it and looks like she's never let you down.
Very cool one again!!! errr warm one at that hehe! I love that photo also!
It's amazing how we lose track of how much work is actually done for such things as warmth and dry firewood. The modern world has totally divorced us from the intensive work of living; the funny thing about it is for as much work as actual life demands, it's a lot easier than the stuff we often call "work" most of which is useless and doesn't do much more than move abstractions around; with "traditional" western jobs, workers never actually SEE or otherwise sense the end results of their labors, and your written piece underscores this perfectly. You're warmed multiple times and for all that you do, there comes a moment when you're all snug and comfortable and that snug comfort is a direct result of the work you've done. I love the fact that you brought this up and presented it so elegantly. Great work as always, and I LOVE the image that goes with the piece.
Yet we still haven't finished really because you have to take the ashes out of the grate and then if you use them in the garden the whole cycle starts again. Did you forget that bit? Excellent prose Marilyn, I wonder if you felt warm whilst typing the words about Wood into the computer.lol. You certainly work hard. I just press a switch and the gas lights. The modern world and its appliances has made a lot of us lazy. Bravo!!!!!
Hi Marilyn the way I look at it Chores are hard work each part a step to grow ways for a soul to open up Live and learn can see wonderful work I so enjoyed sweet sunsnine to you warm hug, Linda
lot of work but i bet the apples is super too. wonderful words
This is a clever cyclical piece of poetry ... but, sadly, you've miscounted. The true answer is five ... you [and your wood have just warmed us up! Mike
The California Chain-saw Massacre! Wow, after all that extensive and intensive effort cutting, slicing, dicing, et al, I'm surprised you even had the wherewithal to compose a description of your day's chores. Excellent epilogue and image showing the abundant result of your efforts.
Whew! I'm tired just thinking about it! Love the poem - your writing is wonderful!
well you warmed me up just talking about it :o)..you can`nt beat an open fire for cosy and warm mick
Ah, and not forgetting that you have to ger rid of the ashes as well ;-) The problem realy is that sometimes you get realy warm, when you don't need it at all. So yep, the wood all going up into the fire is the best bit!
A lovely way of looking at it. Turning a tedious and difficult task into something so reminiscent and toasty to the mind.
