Description
Cheung Chau means 'long island' in Cantones. It is one of 243 Outlying Islands besides Hong Kong. Cheung Chau is 10km west of Hong Kong, off the south-east tip of Lantau and is only 2.5kmsq in size. Despite of this, it is the most populuous island with about 40,000 people living there, 10% of them on junks and sampans anchored offshore.
There is evidence that Cheung Chau was inhabited in prehistoric times. It had a thriving fishing community 2,500 years ago, and for centuries early Cantonese and Hakka settlers supplemented their income with piracy and smuggling.
As most of the other Outlying Islands, Cheung Chau has no vehicular traffic. This picture was taken in January 1996 and later scanned.
