Continuing my unwinding of cryptic expression I approach this hallowed form I discovered in the WSJ today. Some would ask why this image is in historical when it didn't happen. Yet, that is precisely the point. Looking for a DH-5 with a Wright H-2 and Marlin machine guns will take you all over the map of mass production leaving Jennys and Libertys clogging your ports. You will be trained and debarked. Iconic designs will be swirled under your nose with names like SPAD and Nieuport but when you want a single item that was sent to the front and engaged in combat you must wait a long time to meet Captain Rickenbacker in his outer office. There is no hoax, this is a real ace. Vickie on the meadow with a potato digger? Not exactly. Bomber jackets? Not yet.
