Description
Greta oto is a tiny brush-footed butterfly, and is a member of the clearwing clade; its wings are transparent. Its most common English name is Glasswing, and its Spanish name is Espejitos, which means "little mirrors." Indeed, the tissue between the veins of its wings looks like glass, and you can see how it reflects back the colours of the flower it is one.
It was one of the more abundant clearwing species in its home range, which extends throughout Central America into Mexico. Though it is becoming more rare these days with the destruction of it's habitat, and sensitive to pollution, in this way it is used as a good sign of the purity of the area if these are found..
The opaque borders of its wings are dark brown sometimes tinted with red or orange, and its body is grey to dark in colour. Its wingspan is between 5.5 and 6 cm.

You shot really shows off the delicacy and fragile nature of this beautiful creature. Excellent capture.
Well of the couple of shots I got of this little butty, none of them have come out as richly coloured as this with the colours reflecting as you have captured them!! This is brilliant Danny - and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your help, not only with showing me a few basics of the camera whilst at the Butterfly Garden, but for your expert advice and haggling for the camera itself!! You are an inspiration to me and I have so much to learn from your photography. Excellent composition and brilliant DOF too in this one. Hugs Chrissy xx
