Description
The Northern Gannet is a magnificent bird with a gleaning white body, golden head, black wing tips and two metre wingspan. These birds are plunge divers and will drop into the sea from heights of 40 or more metres.
Two thirds of the worlds population of these birds are in the UK and some concerns are now being expressed due to the increasing length of flights the birds have to make to find food.. Often as far as Norway and back..
The birds mate for life, and one parent will stay with the chicks, however these long trips often results in the other parent having to leave to find food, thus leaving the chicks exposed to predation..
