Description
This is one of those faces I bumped into whilst I was back in time. This chap(for he was no gentleman) lived in the squatters cottage(you can see the roof behind him). He was out in the winter sunlight cutting up logs small enough to go on the open fire, he was quite a cheery sort of man, smiling and laughing, even whilst he was sawing away. He told me a little of his life, in the year of 1861, he lived in the two roomed cottage, one bedroom, a living room/kitchen and a small larder dug down almost like a cellar. He was called Micheal Corbett(44) a cobbler, he lived here with his wife Sarah, Also living here were his sons, Thomas(24), William(22) and John(17) all coal miners, their daughters Sarah(20) and Susanna(14) both iron ore pickers on the pit banks, another son Matthew(5) and a visitor William Corbett(10) All these people living in a two room cottage. Through out his tale he never stopped smiling but then, this man was only telling the story.
How different must it have been, in 1861?

So this is what you got up to, taking photos of these people I never got to see while I walked the distance of the canal and back through the woods. A cunning Paparazzi ploy, no less! lol. Another wonderful Sepia with an excellent Tale to go with it Jeff. I've got something in store to post in a few days time lol. ( can't stop laughing ).

It’s like I see my granddad again. They lived very different of course. I remember that my granddad and grandmother slept in a, I don’t know the word in English, but it was a room 2X2 meters with only a bed in it. The doors where closed when they where asleep. I think it was practical because of the cold, heating was expensive and they don’t have a lot of money. It was comment to sleep that way in Holland, only the wealthy people had a normal bedroom. Just one of those things that we can’t imagine anymore that they have lived the way they did. And this story is in 1957, it must have being very different in 1861! Beautiful photo. Well done.

i know you and me dont go this far back ,i dont think we do anyway lol :o)..getting back to the point i can remember from my childhood when we had no central heating ,having to chop sticks for the open fire and also to sell a few to make a few bob and this reminded me of that .its funny how looking at something triggers such memories .another excellent image in a fanastic series jeff and again love the info mick
