Description
The Arctic fox has evolved to live in the most frigid extremes on the planet. Among its adaptations for cold survival are its deep, thick fur, the warmest fur of any mammal.
Its furry paws allow it to walk on ice floors in search of food, a system of countercurrent heat exchange in the circulation of paws to keep them from freezing. It is also able to walk on top of snow and listen for the movements of prey underneath.
Also it has a good supply of body fat. The fox has a low surface-area-to-volume ratio as evidenced by its generally rounded body shape, short muzzle and legs, and short, thick ears. Since less of its surface area is exposed to the cold, less heat escapes the body.
A born survivor it is very intelligent and often will follow Polar bears and wait to scavange off the left overs.. However it can fall prey to the bears, and needless to say humanity for its wonderful fur coat..

A very nice capture, the facial expression looks like he is deep in thought, whatever Arctic foxes think about! With the polar sea soon to be ice free in summer I wonder how his kin with fare with fewer polar bears to follow for food. Let's hope for the best for all Arctic creatures. Thanks.

What a neat face! Awesome shot! And great info! When I lived in Alaska (for a short time as a pre-teen), I saw one of these stuffed (or is the term mounted?) and used as part of the decor (along with a giant (I was short) polar bear). I didn't know anything about them -- I just wanted one as a pet. Wonderful capture! :^)

Man rationalizes what he cannot create. In total is it enough to allow survival or should the fox have one more or one less adaptation?
