Description
I always wondered where Go-Carting originated from. This could be the answer because according to the notes from the Shibden Hall museum, this is called a GOAT CART.
The cart pictured here was used by the children of the Rawson Family who were from the neighbouring town of Sowerby pronounced(so-be)in the late 19th centuary. It was built as a minature carriage with eliptical (oval shaped) springs full lock on the front wheels to make turning easier, and originally a hood that came right over the driver. The Cart was pulled by a pair of Goats harnessed on either side of the pole.
Behind this in the picture is an old Penny Farthing Bicycle, which was a bit of a bone shaker of a ride.
Thanks for coming by and taking a look.

:-) When I was about 10 I had a couple horses and pastured them at a man's farm. He had sheep that ate my mare's tail off but he also had goats. In the barn was a 2-wheeled goat cart and every weekend I would hitch up the goat and go for a ride on the dirt and crushed shell roads near the farm. This sure makes me remember those days.
A wonderful shot, Alan. So intersting to see the transportation of the past. Would have loved to have seen the goats harnessed to the cart long ago. I am very fond of goats!! We have a Victorian weekend in Bay, two guys bring their penny farthings and ride them around the village.. Can you imagine that on the hills of Bay. A splendid work from you. Hugs. Diane.
A wonderful piece of history you are sharing with us. Great shot!
Fantastic shot and narrative Alan, I used to have a pet goat when I was about two/three years old and my dad made a little wooden cart for it to pull me up and down the street, I have a picture of it somewhere, I will see if I can find it. It looks like this could do with a bit of tlc but what a treasure! Bravo!!!!!
Antiques are so interesting! Great capture! And, thanks for the insight on the bicycle and the goat cart! :^)
BEAUTIFUL CAPTURE ;)
I would never ride a bike if that was the only choice.I never had that good of balance to ride on one like that. must be an excellent museum and a fine capture
